TITLE: Elementary Library Media Assistant
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Prior experience working with elementary-aged students preferred. Strong oral and written communication skills required. The preferred candidate demonstrates a love of literacy, reading, and working with children.
ABILITY TO:
- Use electronic library inventory systems, email, Google Workspace, and other office software or systems.
- Organize and manage time in a structured elementary learning environment.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Foster a welcoming, positive, and organized library atmosphere for young learners.
- Demonstrate patience, flexibility, and respect for student and colleague diversity.
CLASSIFICATION:
Part-Time, 185-Day Support Staff Position. Pay is hourly based on the Library Media Assistant schedule.
JOB GOAL:
To support the daily operation of the elementary library/media center by assisting students and staff, maintaining organization of library materials, and providing a welcoming environment that encourages reading and learning.
REPORTS TO: Principal / Designee
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with the daily operation of the elementary library/media center.
- Supervise and assist students utilizing the library/media center.
- Manage circulation desk functions, including check-in/check-out procedures.
- Shelve books and materials accurately and efficiently.
- Maintain the physical appearance, organization, and cleanliness of the library/media center.
- Assist students and staff in locating books and materials.
- Greet and assist students, staff, families, and visitors in person, by phone, and through email communication.
- Monitor student behavior in the library and reinforce school expectations.
- Track overdue materials and coordinate notices and fees with the bookkeeper as necessary.
- Assist with inventory and processing of library materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on support staff evaluation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
- Frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the library and school environment.
- Frequently lift, carry, and move library materials, instructional resources, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Occasionally move materials or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds with or without assistance.
- Operate computers, office equipment, and library/media equipment.
- Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through written communication.
