Your Opportunity
The role of a Civil Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is to work as a team member with project managers, intermediate and senior engineers as in project teams of all sizes. You should be able to develop engineering designs that achieve stated design objectives, follow criteria and guidelines, and address project-specific complexities. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include project coordination, modelling and design, calculations, technical writing, and field work.
This entry-level position will suit an enthusiastic individual with ambitions to build a career in an industry-leading Water Engineering team.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Perform conveyance engineering, stormwater management and site design which may include engineering models and drawings, hydraulic system calculations, pipe design calculations, quantity calculations and cost estimating.
- Understand and follow established design guidelines and standards.
- Work with designers and modellers, including working directly in modelling and design software at times, to develop design elements including conveyance alignments and profiles, site and stormwater management grading.
- Review, interpret, summarize and evaluate existing information such as sewer inspection CCTV, as-built drawings, reports, and GIS databases.
- Assist in the preparation of engineering project documents, applications for regulatory agencies, client presentations, client contact and communication pertaining to specific project deliverables.
- Coordinate with CAD technicians for preparation of engineering drawings.
- Carry out site visits to collect field data, then compile field notes and photographs.
- Proactively assist project managers with project administration including progress reports, schedule updates, document control, meeting agendas and minutes, and design team coordination.
- Attend and assist in client, contractor, stakeholder, and regulatory agency meetings to gain a better understanding of client’s goals, project requirements, site assessments, key challenges, coordination.
- During construction review shop drawings and submittals, responds to request for information, carry out site inspection and prepare site observation reports, and perform other contract administration tasks.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Strong interest in conveyance engineering, stormwater management and/or site design.
- General understanding of concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure conveyance systems, geotechnical, survey, storm water/drainage design, and site grading.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex ideas and outcomes through technical memoranda and reports.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively within a team.
- Excellent attention to detail, specifically with accuracy in drafting and calculations and completeness of data
- Ability to interpret sketches, drawings and other similar material.
- Enthusiasm to take initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the design team.
- Experience with civil engineering design related software such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Take initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the design team.
- Developing ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies..
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering. Working toward licensure as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL)
Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
