Job Description
Costain has been appointed as Delivery Integration Partner by National Highways (NH) for delivery of the £240m improvement of the Simister Island M60/M62/M66 interchange (M60 Junction 18), north of Manchester. As Delivery Integration Partner, Costain will overhaul the busy junction involving complex traffic management to keep tens of thousands of vehicles moving whilst construction takes place.
The works consist of:
- A new free flow ‘northern loop’ link road to take drivers directly from M60 eastbound to M60 southbound without exiting the motorway
- M66 mainline southbound widening and southbound slip road realignment to allow for construction of the northern loop
- A widened connector road from M60 northbound to M60 westbound – replacing the current single lane with two lanes
- Adding an extra lane in each direction on the M60 Junctions 17 to 18 (increasing from 4 to 5 lanes) while retaining the hard shoulders
- Upgrades to drainage, lighting, motorway technology, signage and signalling.
We have an exciting opportunity of a General Foreperson to join a large scale Highways project in Greater Manchester. The role of General Foreperson will be to safely manage people and all operational activities on medium to large projects ensuring HSQE, programme and budget requirements are met.
- Manage sub-contractors and the workforce
- Communicate with rest of site team including engineers, quantity surveyors, safety officers and the client to ensure full understanding of information.
- Build and develop the team to deliver all aspects of the project requirements Provide, monitor and control labour, plant and materials to meet the programme. Ensure daily diaries and allocation sheets are up to date.
- Ensure safe systems of work over all activities.
- Ensure all records, e.g. plant, delivery tickets, temporary works and permits are up to date and in place. Assist line manager / engineers with programming and production of activity plans.
- Contribute to weekly meetings and QF regarding safety, progress, resourcing, costs and programme. Ensure all statutory weekly or daily inspections are carried out, e.g. weekly safety and environment tours.
- Assist and promote the development of the workforce e.g. identify training requirements, review the performance of the workforce and ensure delivery of tool box talks.
- Ensure high standard of quality on the works to at least meet the specification requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Essential
- Successful experience as a foreman on a Highways project
- In-depth knowledge of company policy and procedures, safety legislation and environment issues
- Able to read drawings and construct to them, work to a programme and keep written and electronic records.
- Demonstrate experience in relevant civil engineering activities and temporary works. Able to develop and promote safe systems of work.
- Good people management skills and experience in team building.
- Excellent communication skills.

- Attendance of Site Briefing Presenters course
- Attendance of Annual Management of Health & Safety and Your Safety is My Safety
Desirable
- NVQ Level 6 in Construction Management
- Successful Completion of the FLM Manager programme
- Member of a professional body
- NEC course
