About the Role:
We are looking for a talented, self-driven Principal Software Engineer with a strong Java background to join and expand our Amman engineering team. This role focuses on backend development within our Content Management System (CMS), supporting how authors worldwide submit and manage research that drives scientific discovery.
As a principal-level engineer, you will lead technical direction while remaining hands-on, contributing to the design and delivery of scalable, high-impact solutions. We value strong technical leadership, ownership, and mindset as much as years of experience.
How You Will Make an Impact
- Lead the architecture, design, development, and maintenance of core backend systems and features
- Drive technical direction and engineering best practices across the team
- Act as a hands-on technical leader, delivering complex initiatives and high-impact solutions
- Mentor engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and knowledge sharing
- Collaborate with QA and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality releases on time
- Troubleshoot complex issues across development and production environments
- Ensure systems are scalable, maintainable, and reliable through strong design and code reviews
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including refactoring and technical debt management
- Partner with global stakeholders and teams to align technical solutions with business goals
- Foster collaboration across regions, adapting to different time zones and working styles.
What We Look For
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
- Strong communication skills in English (written and verbal)
- Proven experience in Java development (typically 5+ years), with strong knowledge of object-oriented design and software architecture
- Solid professional experience in software development (typically 8+ years)
- Hands-on experience with Spring Framework and Hibernate
- Experience building RESTful APIs and web services
- Experience working with messaging systems such as JMS
- Strong understanding of relational databases
- Experience with version control systems such as Git
- Familiarity with unit testing frameworks (e.g., JUnit, Mockito)
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills
- Ability to lead technical discussions and influence architectural decisions
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and deliver in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
- Experience with SQL Server or similar RDBMS
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions) or cloud platforms (e.g., GCP)
- Experience working in Linux environments
- Familiarity with Agile Scrum methodologies and ceremonies
- Experience troubleshooting production incidents and performing root cause analysis
- Experience improving system performance and addressing bottlenecks
- Experience leading large-scale technical initiatives or modernization efforts
- Familiarity with front-end styling tools such as Sass
- Knowledge of XML technologies (XQuery, XSLT) and semantic web technologies (RDF, SPARQL)
