Pathologist (Advanced Diagnostics)
Job Description
The Department of Laboratory Medicine at William Osler Health System is seeking one full-time Pathologist, based at Brampton Civic Hospital. The successful candidate will join a hybrid staffing model within Advanced Diagnostics and Anatomic Pathology, working in collaboration with subspecialists across pathology disciplines.
This role will focus on expanding Osler’s advanced molecular diagnostics program, with particular emphasis biomarker testing, liquid biopsy, next-generation sequencing, immunohistochemistry, digital pathology, and diagnostic histomorphology. Remuneration will be in accordance with the Uniform Minimum Level of Compensation (UMLC) for Pathologists in Ontario.
About the Program
Osler’s advanced diagnostics program provides immunohistochemistry (IHC), and next generation sequencing (NGS), among other modalities to support diagnostic and clinical services It also provides biomarker support to a growing catchment within Ontario. The program draws professional support from MD-trained pathologists, integrating biomarker testing with diagnostic work.
The advanced diagnostics program has close ties with Osler’s Research Institute for Health Innovation (ORIHI), where the successful applicant will have ample opportunity to participate in or lead their own research.
The advanced diagnostics program is also accredited with the European Masters of Molecular Pathology (EMMP) and is currently providing fellowship training for AP/GP residents in molecular pathology.
William Osler is among the first hospitals in Canada to provide plasma-based NGS (liquid biopsy) to support cancer care and management of patients with solid tumors. Participation in this program is expected of the successful applicant.
Osler’s advanced diagnostics program closely supports a regionally renowned cancer program, including one of the top recruiting clinical trials programs in the country.
The Laboratory Medicine Program at William Osler Health System is a collaborative, multidisciplinary team comprising anatomic pathologists, hematopathologists, medical microbiologists, and clinical biochemists. The successful applicant will be cross-functional in advanced diagnostics and anatomic pathology.
- Candidates must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario with certification in Anatomic Pathology, Anatomic or General Pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or a recognized equivalent
- Subspecialty interest in a field of surgical pathology would be an asset, including head and neck, thyroid or cytopathology; however, any subspecialty interests will be considered
- Applicants should have demonstrated interest in molecular diagnostics, including familiarity with next generation sequencing technologies, assay interpretation and development, and integration of molecular findings into clinical care
- Prior involvement in molecular case sign-out, assay validation or participation in precision oncology programs, or formal fellowship training, will be considered strong assets, however, a molecular pathology fellowship is not a requirement
- Strong communication skills, collegiality and a collaborative approach are essential
- Demonstrated interest or experience in laboratory quality assurance, medical leadership or management will be viewed favorably
- Proficiency in English is required; additional language skills are an asset, reflecting the diversity of the patient population we serve
