Metrology Technician (Hourly)
Job Description
Role Overview
The Metrology Technician develops, evaluates, and maintains the sophisticated calibration systems used to measure physical and chemical phenomena. You will define the standards for length, mass, time, temperature, and electrical current, ensuring that all instrumentation meets rigorous accuracy and precision requirements. This is a highly technical role that combines physics, mathematics, and engineering to quantify and minimize measurement uncertainty.

Key Responsibilities
Measurement System Governance: Develop, evaluate, and maintain sophisticated calibration systems. Define the standards for base and derived units (length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, pressure, flow, velocity).
Precision Metrology & Inspection: Serve as the division expert for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Program, set up, and operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs). Use other precision tools like height gauges, optical comparators, and various plug and thread gauges.
Error Analysis & Quality Improvement: Identify and quantify sources of error (Uncertainty Analysis) and adjust measurement capabilities to minimize errors. Conduct process audits (Layered Process Audits) and perform root cause analysis (5W+1H, 5 Whys) to ensure quality compliance and defect prevention.
Analytical Testing & Claims Resolution: Perform analytical tests on raw materials and finished products (e.g., purity, particle size, hardness). Inspect products at job sites to substantiate customer claims and formulate compensation offers.
Technical Leadership & Advocacy: Direct engineering, quality, and laboratory teams in the design and selection of approved measurement standards. Serve as the internal Subject Matter Expert (SME) and represent the organization in industrial standardization committees (such as NIST or ISO).
Equipment & Facility Maintenance: Perform general maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of production and facility equipment, including electrical, mechanical, CNC, PLC, and robot automation. May set up and operate metalworking tools to make and repair parts, and construct physical flow racks for continuous improvement initiatives.
Physical Requirements
Lifting & Mobility: Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds (with or without assistance).
Work Environment: Ability to work at elevated heights (up to 40 feet) using ladders, platforms, and lifts, and in confined space areas.
Movement: Requires standing, walking, and moving freely throughout the plant and lab environment for extended periods.
Other: Good vision and excellent verbal/written communication skills are essential.
Minimum Requirements
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. An Associate Degree in a technical or engineering discipline is strongly preferred.
Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of documented, combined experience in Metrology, CMM Programming, or Industrial Maintenance/Skilled Trades in a manufacturing environment.
Technical Knowledge:
Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering blueprints, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and electrical/mechanical schematics.
Demonstrated experience with CMM programming (e.g., PC-DMIS) and various precision measurement tools.
Working knowledge of industrial maintenance, including troubleshooting PLC logic (e.g., Allen Bradley), VFDs, CNC, and 480V electrical systems.
Ability to apply statistical analysis and execute Measurement System Evaluations (MSE) and Gage R&R studies.
Certifications: Completion of a four-year apprenticeship, State Journeyman Card in a relevant trade, or ASQ Certified Quality Technician is highly desirable.
