  • Full-Time, 12-month fixed term opportunity, Located on the Darlington Campus at the University of Sydney

  • Base Salary, Academic Level B offering a base salary of $127,436 - $151,328 p.a. + 17% superannuation

The School of Aerospace Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (AMME) is one of Australia’s leading research and teaching Engineering Schools, with degree programs in Mechanical, Mechatronic, Aeronautical and Space Engineering. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Materials Characterisation to join a dynamic, externally funded research program. The successful candidate will work both independently and collaboratively within a multi-institutional team comprising HDR and Honours students and international partners, contributing to high-impact research and the University’s strategic research priorities. The role is based in the Australian Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis.

This role offers a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, with a strong emphasis on developing innovative materials solutions for applications in the automotive, maritime, renewable energy, and aerospace sectors.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • work closely with HDR and Honours students, academic colleagues, and national and international research and industry partners

  • conduct high-quality research on advanced materials processed via powder bed fusion and solid-state additive manufacturing

  • apply advanced microscopy and microanalysis techniques to characterise multiscale structural and chemical features

  • establish processing–microstructure–property relationships to guide high-performance materials design

  • support metal powder fabrication, characterisation, and additive manufacturing process optimisation

  • contribute to research outputs, funding applications, and collaborative projects while supporting mentoring and a positive research culture.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

  • a PhD qualification or equivalent in materials science and engineering, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline

  • demonstrated experience in independent research with a developing publication track record

  • strong expertise in metal additive manufacturing, particularly powder bed fusion, solid-state processing, or related techniques

  • a solid understanding of microstructure-property-processing relationships in advanced materials

  • hands-on experience with advanced microscopy and microanalysis techniques, including atom probe microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, focussed ion beam techniques, and electron backscattered diffraction, amongst others

  • experience in metal powder characterisation, processing, and optimisation of additive manufacturing workflows.
