Scientist II
Job Description
• The Tumor Cell Biology Department of the Oncology-Rinat Research division in La Jolla, CA is seeking a full time contractor to join our drug discovery team
• The scientist/biochemist will make important contributions to the discovery and pre-clinical development of oncology therapeutics
• In particular, the biochemist will be responsible for the development and validation of robust, reproducible plate-based enzyme assays
• This will include kinetic and mechanistic studies to characterize enzyme targets, biochemical pathways, and mechanism of action of lead compounds
• This may also include development of assays which measure ligand-receptor interaction using purified proteins, membrane preparations or cells
• Candidate will be responsible for testing lead compounds in biochemical and cellular assays, data analysis, and proper database publication of data
• Candidate will participate on project teams, providing insight and technical expertise required for project progression.
• BS or BS/MS with 2-5 years or more experience in industry or relevant academic lab
• Candidate will have extensive experience in biochemical and cellular assay development and validation
• Experience in cancer research, drug discovery, immunology, or cross discipline skills which can be applied to drug discovery
• Knowledge of biochemistry theory and practice, with particular understanding of enzymology
• Experience in assay development, mechanisms of enzyme inhibition, and assays which measure ligand receptor interaction is preferred
• Experience with automation of assays, LC-MS, radio-labeled ligand binding, fluorescence, and coupled-enzyme assays is also desired
• Experience with standard Windows 7/8, Microsoft Office including Excel, and GraphPad Prism
• Candidate must be able to quickly learn new in-house software for data management
• Must have strong oral and written communication skills
• Must be competent in standard chemical calculations to accurately prepare laboratory solutions and calculate dilutions for screening
• The candidate must be flexible, organized and attentive to details
• Accurate record keeping and ability to follow precise steps in a protocol are required
• Ability to multi-task, able to independently analyze data, troubleshoot and solve problems
• Ability to work independently and contribute to team goals in a collaborative environment
• Preference for candidates with pharmaceutical/biotech drug discovery experience evaluating small-molecule inhibitors of enzyme or receptor targets.
Physical and Mental requirements-
• Work at lab bench and at desk
• Work with standard radioactive materials (3H, 32P, etc.)
• Ability to process and analyze raw data using software programs including Excel, GraphPad Prism and Activity Base
• Must maintain an electronic lab notebook and keep records up to date.
