Job Description
The Director of Physician Compensation is responsible for the design, administration, and governance of physician compensation programs across a multi-specialty, multi-market organization. This role oversees both physician Partner and Employed physician compensation frameworks and ensures alignment with organizational strategy, financial performance, market competitiveness, and regulatory requirements.
This position serves as a key strategic partner to Finance, Accounting Operations, and Physician Leadership, driving standardization, enhancing analytics, and supporting scalable compensation administration across a complex and evolving platform. The role also ensures a best-in-class physician experience in compensation delivery, emphasizing transparency, accuracy, proactive communication, and a high level of service to physician partners.
Key Responsibilities
Compensation Administration & Service Delivery
- Lead the design and evolution of physician compensation models across specialties
- Develop and support provider incentive structures tied to productivity, quality, and growth
- Oversee compensation calculations and reconciliation processes
- Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and scalability across multiple models
- Ensure a high level of service delivery to physician partners and internal stakeholders through timely, accurate, and well-communicated compensation outputs
Analytics & Decision Support
- Lead ad hoc analysis to support physician compensation insights, including income trends, productivity, and plan performance
- Partner with Finance and Physician Leadership to inform decision-making related to compensation plan design, changes, and elections
- Develop pro forma analyses for new partners, compensation plan transitions, and structural changes at the practice
Governance, Controls & Compliance
- Maintain and enforce strong governance over physician compensation programs, including standardized policies, procedures, and documentation
- Ensure all compensation calculations and distributions are compliant with applicable regulatory requirements, including strict adherence to Stark Law requirements related to DHS income distribution
- Oversee the integrity of DHS income allocation methodologies, ensuring distributions are compliant, consistently applied, and supported by appropriate documentation
- Ensure all compensation outputs are fully reconciled to NetSuite financials, with compensation administered exclusively based on finalized accounting data as the single source of truth
- Maintain SOX-compliant processes and controls, including audit-ready documentation and support for internal and external audits
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Serve as a key liaison between Finance, Accounting, Operations, and Physician Leadership, ensuring a high level of responsiveness and partnership with physician stakeholders
- Collaborate to ensure alignment between financial results and compensation models
- Support integration of new platforms and acquisitions, including onboarding and standardization of physician compensation
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and develop a high-performing team across physician compensation functions
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration
Qualifications
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, or related field required. MBA or advanced degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Five to ten (5-10+) years relevant experience in a healthcare-related industry.
- Experience in physicians services consulting in a multi-location physicians practice is preferred.
- Experience in physician compensation preferred.
