Job Description
At SLR Consulting we are looking for new recruits to grow our rapidly expanding Mining Advisory team. The team provides important consulting services to the mining industry at every stage of project development, operation and closure, from initial exploration through to rehabilitation. This role is for a Principal Mining Engineer, to be based in our Almaty office in Kazakhstan.
With your knowledge and expertise, you will advise major mining companies, mid-caps, junior mining and exploration companies, along with financial institutions, governments, law firms, and individual investors, on the technical, financial and commercial aspects of mineral property development. You will be part of a broad EMEA team but with will be required to help strengthen our presence in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
As a Principal Mining Engineer you will work within the Mine Engineering sub-team of the Mining Advisory group in EMEA, but alongside a global cohort of over 200 mining advisory personnel, and 2,000 mining-related staff. You will work alongside other mining consultants, including geologists, geotechnical engineers, mining engineers, and mineral processing engineers. The role will include elements of technical work, project management, and business development, and will involve some travel, and ultimately client-facing engagements. You will be contributing to a mix of due diligence, feasibility, and operational projects in mining consulting.
The role
In this role your duties will be varied, but will primarily involve:
- Assessment, due diligence, and technical auditing of mines and projects
- Inputs into, and management of, feasibility assessments (scoping/PEA, PFS, DFS)
- Understanding of the Kazakhstan Subsoil Code, hands-on experience with KAZRC:
- Mine design and optimisation in a variety of commodities, including:
- Running of 3D mine design and scheduling software as an advanced user
- Estimation of project capital and operating costs
- Financial modelling and analysis
- Mineral Reserve estimation
- Report writing and client presentations
- Management of technical assignments, including budgets and cost control
- Mentoring and leadership of other team members
- Business development, with an expectation to bring new opportunities and projects into the company. There will be a particular focus on the Central Asia region, growing relationships in Kazakhstan and beyond
- Travel abroad; extended periods are not the norm but may be required on occasion. Short term travel, often at short notice will likely be a frequent occurrence.

About you
With wide-ranging experience of the mining sector across various commodities and regions, your qualifications and background should include:
- University degree (or equivalent) in Mining Engineering or closely related discipline
- Registered or qualified for registration as a Recognised Professional Engineer in Kazakhstan (PONEN) and potentially UK/Europe, Canada, USA, Australia, or South Africa
- Extensive and varied operational knowledge and industry experience in openpit and/or underground mining
- Mine planning, optimisation, design, and scheduling experience across one or more software suites
- Familiarity with international and public disclosure and reporting codes, including KAZRC, NI 43-101, JORC, SAMREC, Competent Persons Reports, and Mineral Expert Reports etc
- Competent Persons Reports, and Mineral Expert Reports etc.
- Strong financial modelling and analysis skills
- Project management experience, being successful in meeting objectives and budgets
- Excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to write concise reports and interact with clients
- Language Requirements: English, Russian, Kazakh (optional)
