The EHS Generalist will execute the daily functions of the EHS compliance plan for APEL Extrusions, Inc. in Phoenix, AZ. They will be accountable for all Environmental, Health, and Safety activities, reducing risk, eliminating incidents, and ensuring the location remains in compliance with all external regulatory requirements and internal management guidelines. The EHS Generalist will play an integral role in ensuring the locations of the environmental air permit and water permit meet all regulatory requirements and all data, process details, and compliance information is maintained for the plants anodizing and painting processes. The EHS Generalist will directly report to the EHS and Security Manager.
Duties and responsibilities
- Maintain all records and documents as they pertain to the environmental air permit and water permit.
- Perform site compliance sampling and submission to labs for analysis.
- Assess and monitor site compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Work with plant personnel to ensure compliance.
- Help to develop and conduct required environmental training.
- Prepare applicable required environmental training.
- Facilitate environmental incident prevention and investigation processes and prepare reports to appropriate agencies.
- Direct the facility’s waste management program.
- Conduct site regulatory compliance audits.
- Monitor waste streams and waste products to eliminate or minimize waste generation.
- Monitor wastewater treatment systems to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Interface with all levels of the organization and external agencies, vendors and contacts.
- Participate in all EHS incident investigations.
- Responsible for all Environmental incident investigations.
- Actively pursue projects or process improvements that can reduce environmental impacts, reduce costs, and increase efficiencies of environmental functions.
- Help and support to develop and execute strategic and tactical Health and Safety plans to drive fatality prevention, increase risk recognition, and reduce injuries/incidents.
- Ensure the Health and Safety activities reduce risk, eliminate incidents, and are performed within external regulatory requirements and internal management guidelines.
- Help to develop, conduct, and supervise all EHS training.
Qualifications / Competencies - Knowledge - Skills
- Strong communication, analytical and human relations skills.
- Skilled in use of personal computers with emphasis on analytical software.
- Ability to take initiative, meet deadlines, and work in a team environment.
- Proven experience in monitoring permit requirements and maintaining accurate compliance records, including data collection, validation, and reporting to support adherence to environmental regulatory permits and reporting obligations.
- Excellent verbal/written communication, presentation, training/leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, from an accredited institution or 3-5 years’ EHS experience within a manufacturing or industrial work environment.
- Previous experience focusing on Environmental is required (internship and/or full-time employment).
- Previous experience in aluminum manufacturing preferred.
- Experience in driving EHS policies / procedures, self-assessments, training and audit processes.
- Experience in preparing environmental permit applications is preferred.
- Experience with SWPPP (Storm, water, pollution, prevention plan) and SPCC (Spill, prevention, control, and countermeasure) Plans.
- Experience administering environmental compliance training.
Working Environment
- Exposed to a production environment which includes noise, dust, moving machinery, forklifts and fluctuations in temperature.
