Job Description

Title: Middle School Girls Head Wrestling Coach

 

Position Summary: The Head Wrestling Coach is responsible for leading, organizing, and supervising all aspects of the middle school wrestling program. The coach provides leadership that promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth while maintaining a positive, safe, and competitive environment aligned with the school district's mission and athletic philosophy. 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Plan, organize, and direct all wrestling practices, meetings, and team activities.
  • Teach and develop fundamental wrestling skills, techniques, and conditioning appropriate to student-athletes' skill levels.
  • Promote good sportsmanship, respect, and positive character both on and off the mat.
  • Supervise assistant coach(es) and coordinate their responsibilities to ensure an efficient program.
  • Oversee the selection, instruction, and evaluation of athletes.
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, staff, and administrators regarding team expectations, schedules, and program goals.
  • Ensure all athletes meet eligibility, academic, and training standards in accordance with district and state athletic association policies.
  • Organize and oversee off-season conditioning, open mat sessions, and youth program connections when permitted.
  • Ensure compliance with district, league, state association (e.g., KSHSAA), and NFHS rules and regulations.
  • Help with care, distribution, and inventory of wrestling equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
  • Serve as a role model of professionalism, integrity, and high ethical standards on and off the field.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and Athletic Director.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of:
    • Rules, techniques, and strategies of competitive wrestling.
    • Principles of athletic conditioning, training, and nutrition.
    • Injury prevention, care, and emergency response procedures.
    • Familiarity with district policies, codes of conduct, and eligibility requirements.
  • Skills in:
    • Strong instructional and motivational coaching techniques.
    • Effective communication with athletes, parents, staff, and administrators.
    • Leadership and team-building abilities to develop cohesive, high-performing teams.
    • Organizational and time management skills to coordinate practices, meets, and logistics.
    • Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills to manage team dynamics and challenges.
  • Ability to:
    • Inspire athletes to achieve academic and athletic success.
    • Build positive relationships with athletes, parents, and the broader school community.
    • Manage assistant coach(es) and volunteers effectively.
    • Maintain professionalism, composure, and fairness in competitive and stressful situations.
    • Promote and model good sportsmanship, respect, and integrity at all times.

 

Working Conditions: 

  • Work is performed in a variety of indoor athletic settings.
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are required for practices, games, meetings, and events.
  • Moderate to high physical activity, including demonstrating drills, standing for extended periods, and moving athletic equipment.

 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree and/or teaching certification preferred.
  • Previous successful wrestling coaching experience preferred.
  • CPR, First Aide, and AED certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Must meet all district and state requirements for employment and coaching.
