ROLE SUMMARY

The Senior Construction Estimator will estimate project costs related to all self-performed and subcontracted battery energy storage system (BESS) construction project scopes of work. This includes estimating labor production and project costs, not limited to procurement and implementation of: temporary construction facilities, project and field management, permitting, battery storage systems, battery storage containers, fire suppression systems, DC bus and cabling, power conversion systems, MV transformers, cable conveyance systems, auxiliary AC power equipment and wiring, SCADA system cabling, engineering services, testing and commissioning, taxes, contingency, warranties, and margin. The role will include integration and coordination between all project stakeholders and other members of the Project Controls team.

Energy Storage Estimators need to have knowledge of utility grade battery storage system architecture, comprised of an intimate understanding of major battery storage system equipment manufacturers and the cost relationship to periphery systems within the plant following design development changes.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Handle multiple complex project estimate assignments.
  • Continue learning the interrelationship of client RFP information, design, and costs related to energy storage systems within project estimate.
  • Collaborate with personnel from other departments for solicitation of respective cost input into project estimate.
  • Perform all tasks to build complete project estimates from RFP and engineering documents for energy storage system scope of work within the project, including building productivity metrics for related scope activities within the estimate.
  • Estimate operational costs related to temporary construction facilities, project leadership personnel, permitting, taxes, warranties, contingency, and margin
  • Working with TruGrid’s Supply Chain Team, assess the completeness and competitiveness of vendor quotes for materials, equipment, and services
  • Review quote requirements and work with Construction Manager and Engineering to define design requirements, estimate quantities, and obtain quotes from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Coordinate with Sourcing & Procurement team on requests for quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, sharing feedback on supplier and subcontractor pricing and performance, and improving supplier and subcontractor strength.
  • Provide indicative budgets per client request
  • Develop documentation of cost and schedule to support the bidding process.
  • Summarize estimates, translates into proposal form, and provides detailed estimate spreadsheets.
  • Review estimate information with field operations leadership personnel and senior level management for required approvals.
  • Contribute to preparation of TruGrid Scope of Work and other technical bid documents for client submittal.
  • Collaborate with regional leads to understand early-stage project developments and anticipated cost risks
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Set up, maintain, and execute in-house software and prediction tools to support various SMEs
  • Work with TruGrid Supply Chain to solicit new bidders when needed, and collect necessary documents for inclusion in future projects
  • Participate in plan and estimate review meetings, other project review meetings, customer meetings and site investigations, as needed
  • Establish and maintain templates for cost estimates
  • Perform costing reviews to ensure the engineering teams get the results they need from our tools
  • Guide, mentor and support assigned Junior Estimator(s) as needed in the completion of assigned tasks

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited University or College
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Estimating
  • Experience in the battery energy storage / solar / wind or construction experience a plus
  • Experience in substation estimation or construction experience a plus
  • Excellent MS Offices skills, specifically MS Excel
  • Familiarity with HeavyBid or other Estimating software preferred
  • Basic knowledge of a specialized or technical field such as accounting, business administration, mechanical, civil, or electrical technology and a basic working knowledge of estimating.
