The Shipping & Receiving Supervisor is responsible for leading daily shipping, receiving, warehouse, inventory control, and material flow operations within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role oversees personnel, logistics coordination, inventory accuracy, operational performance, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure customer requirements and company objectives are achieved safely and efficiently.


The Supervisor is responsible for fostering a culture centered around safety, accountability, teamwork, operational excellence, and continuous improvement while supporting employee development and cross-functional collaboration throughout the organization.


Duties + Responsibilities


Department Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop Shipping & Receiving personnel through communication, training, accountability, and performance management. 
  • Establish clear expectations related to safety, quality, productivity, attendance, and teamwork. 
  • Support onboarding, cross-training, employee development, and performance evaluations. 
  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and team-oriented work environment aligned with company core values. 
  • Conduct daily departmental communication meetings and provide ongoing operational direction. 

Shipping, Receiving & Warehouse Operations

  • Oversee daily shipping, receiving, warehouse, staging, and inventory activities to ensure timely and accurate processing of materials and finished goods. 
  • Coordinate labor priorities, workflow scheduling, and operational activities to maximize department efficiency and customer service performance. 
  • Ensure shipments meet customer specifications, packaging standards, documentation requirements, and delivery schedules. 
  • Monitor dock activity, transportation schedules, and carrier coordination to support on-time delivery performance and efficient material flow. 
  • Support production operations through material availability, inventory coordination, and shipment execution. 

Inventory Control & ERP Management

  • Maintain inventory accuracy through proper inventory control procedures, transaction oversight, cycle count support, and warehouse organization. 
  • Utilize ERP/WMS systems and operational reporting tools to monitor inventory, shipping activity, labor performance, and operational trends. 
  • Ensure accurate completion and maintenance of shipping records, receiving documentation, freight paperwork, and inventory transactions. 
  • Support resolution of inventory discrepancies, shipment issues, and operational concerns. 

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety-first culture by ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, warehouse procedures, and safe material handling practices. 
  • Conduct routine safety audits, equipment inspections, housekeeping reviews, and operational observations. 
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety concerns while implementing corrective and preventive actions. 
  • Ensure forklift operators are properly trained and operating equipment safely and responsibly. 
  • Support compliance with ISO standards, customer requirements, and operational procedures. 

Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on warehouse organization, workflow efficiency, labor utilization, inventory accuracy, and material flow optimization. 
  • Support Lean manufacturing, 5S, and waste reduction initiatives throughout the department. 
  • Monitor departmental KPIs including: 
  • On-time shipments 
  • Inventory accuracy 
  • Labor efficiency 
  • Shipping quality 
  • Dock utilization 
  • Safety performance 
  • Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional departments to support operational goals and process improvements. 

Customer, Supplier & Carrier Coordination

  • Maintain professional relationships with customers, suppliers, freight carriers, and transportation providers. 
  • Resolve shipping discrepancies, freight claims, delivery concerns, and receiving issues in a timely and professional manner. 
  • Coordinate transportation schedules and freight arrangements to support operational and customer delivery requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise Shipping & Receiving personnel and warehouse operations employees. 
  • Assign work priorities and monitor departmental productivity and operational performance. 
  • Support employee accountability, coaching, training, and development initiatives. 
  • Enforce company policies, procedures, safety standards, and operational expectations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience within shipping, receiving, warehouse, logistics, or manufacturing operations. 
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams, improve accountability, and drive operational performance. 
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems, inventory control processes, warehouse operations, and shipping software. 
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Outlook, and Teams. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional education or training in logistics, supply chain management, operations management, or manufacturing preferred. 
  • Experience leading continuous improvement, Lean manufacturing, or 5S initiatives. 
  • Knowledge of transportation logistics, freight coordination, and customer shipping compliance requirements. 
  • Forklift certification and experience operating warehouse equipment preferred.

Physical Demands + Work Environment

  • The employee must be able to lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and work comfortably in a noisy and potentially hazardous industrial environment. Additionally, they should be capable of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching for extended periods. During job duties, the employee may also need to sit, stoop, kneel, climb, or balance occasionally. They must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and a risk of electrical shock. There is occasional exposure to high, precarious places, and specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment often features loud noise levels due to moving mechanical parts.
