What we are looking for:

The State Forests Division manages 765,000 acres of Oregon’s State Forests to provide long‑term value to the public and partnering counties while protecting natural resources such as soils, water, wildlife habitat, and recreation opportunities. The Recreation, Education, and Interpretation Program supports this mission by delivering diverse outdoor recreation and educational experiences that connect visitors to working forests. The Recreation Section oversees and operates campgrounds, trailheads, OHV areas, and day‑use sites to ensure safe, enjoyable, and meaningful public access to Oregon’s State Forests. Duties Include:
  • Provide maintenance, repair, and operational work for the continued functioning of recreational facilities and non-motorized trails within an assigned geographic area of State Forest land in the Northwest Oregon Area.
  • Perform basic facility and non-motorized trail maintenance work.
  • Collect fees at recreational facilities.
  • Informing the public of regulations and facility information.
  • Facilitate daily volunteer activities, and carrying out a wide range of recreation management activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Eighteen months of experience working in the field of Parks and Recreation Administration, Outdoor Recreation Management, Recreation Planning, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or Forestry Education and Interpretation. 

OR
Associate degree in Parks and Recreation Administration, Outdoor Recreation Management, Recreation Planning, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies, Forestry; or a related natural resource field of study.

OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout.  If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

Desired Skills:

  • Strong facility and grounds maintenance skills.
  • Ability to monitor recreation sites and identify maintenance and repair needs accurately.
  • Experience handling fee collection, reconciliation, and following financial procedures.
  • Ability to follow and implement campground reservation system procedures.
  • Ability to monitor and coordinate contracted services.
  • Strong customer service and public communication skills when interacting with forest visitors.
  • Ability to provide visitor education and share information about State Forests and forest management.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with fire laws and regulations in a fair and professional manner.
  • Ability to respond calmly during emergencies and coordinate with law enforcement or emergency services.

Salary determination: 

Per the Pay Equity Law passed in 2017, a pay equity analysis for starting salary will be conducted to determine what pay step the successful candidate will be offered.
