Job Description:
Lab Lead Accessioner
Location: Port Jefferson, NY
Hours: 5/8.5 Hour Shifts; Monday-Friday (7am-7pm)
Organization: New York Cancer and Blood Specialists (NYCBS)
In This Role, You Will:
Coordinate and prioritize daily workflow by assigning tasks and directing staff to meet operational demands.
Perform and oversee accessioning and specimen management for both in-house testing and reference laboratory services.
Ensure accurate data entry and processing within Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
Monitor and maintain both the quality and productivity of the specimen processing department, with a strong emphasis on accuracy and compliance.
Verify that all staff reconcile test orders between EMR and LIS systems and make necessary corrections.
Ensures all processing specimen issues and add-ons are handled in timely manner.
Ensure all send-out specimens to reference labs are properly prepared and ready for courier pickup in a timely manner.
Maintain and oversee appropriate storage conditions, including correct temperature control for all patient specimens.
Oversee proper labeling and organization of lavender-top specimens, including correct test labeling and rack placement (e.g., Retic, HgbA1c, ESR), and ensure shared specimens are clearly identified.
Ensure coagulation specimens are accurately labeled, with appropriate additional labeling, and that frozen specimens are maintained at required temperatures and stored appropriately (e.g., −20°C freezer).
Ensure STAT specimens are prioritized and handled according to established protocols.
Oversee proper aliquoting and labeling of additional serum tests.
Troubleshoot operational issues and support staff in resolving processing challenges.
Communicate operational concerns to the Processing Supervisor, including supply
needs, staffing issues, and specimen logistics.
Escalate LIS, system, or test-order-related issues and notify the Processing Supervisor as appropriate.
Support staff training, competency assessment, and development of department-specific training materials.
Communicate updates, procedural changes, and processing errors to staff in a timely and effective manner.
Collaborate with leadership to establish departmental goals aligned with organizational objectives.
Processing Lead must be able to troubleshoot.
Provide support across laboratory operations as needed.
We Require:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum of 2 years of relevant laboratory or specimen processing experience.
