Job Description

The Salvation Army believes in meeting the basic needs of individuals and families, young and old. These basic needs include food, clothing, shelter and household needs. While meeting the physical needs, The Salvation Army staff also offer hope and guidance to those coming in for services. The Salvation Army offers holistic and strengths based case management services to families with children who have a desire to take action to break the cycle of crisis and attain a level of increased stability. Families will work in partnership with their case manager and ministry staff to develop an action plan as well as assess their strengths and progress while receiving support and encouragement to reach their goals. This is a part-time, 25 hours/week position.

 

The Youth Program Specialist will facilitate programming to support youth in high-risk situations including youth with substance abuse concerns.

 

About the role:

  • Develop and implement programming to address prevention and support to youth in high-risk situations, including youth with concerns.
    • Identify and secure appropriate program framework and curriculums.
    • Identify youth for program through referrals and outreach.
    • Develop referral relationships with local mental health and substance abuse providers to support youth in need of intensive or clinical services.
    • Coordinate schedule and facilitate weekly activities.
    • Develop and track progress of program outcomes.
  • Plan a variety of educational, recreational, and spiritual development activities and events that promote thriving spiritual, mental, emotional and physical development including:
    • Opportunities to discover and practice love for God, neighbors and extended community.  Involve corps officers for work directly related to spiritual development.
    • Skills for productive participation in family and church life.
    • Build and maintain positive relationships with parents, friends, and other youth.
    • Encourage youth to attend Salvation Army Sunday services, spiritual study and summer camp.
  • Serve as an intentional mentor and role model
    • Share meals and fellowship time
    • Refer individuals to corps officers for pastoral care and spiritual guidance when needed
    • Be available for response to emergency situations beyond normal work hours.
  • Record and maintain statistical information regarding youth related activities and participants.
  • Submit quarterly report to the Director of Operations; based on outcome measures.

Education:  High School diploma, some college in either the field of education, social work, or psychology.

Experience:  One year of experience working with youth.         

Certifications:  Valid Michigan Driver’s License with clearance to drive from TSA insurance.
