Job Description

Position Overview:

We are hiring for a Property Accountant role supporting UK property portfolios across residential, commercial, mixed-use and service charge environments.

This is a hands-on accounting role for someone who can independently manage routine accounting activities, including reconciliations, month-end support, ledger integrity, client reporting and day-to-day issue resolution within defined scope.

The strongest candidates will bring direct property accounting experience. We will also consider candidates from bookkeeping, credit control or service charge backgrounds where they can clearly demonstrate broader accounting capability, exposure to month-end routines, reconciliations and client-facing delivery in a property environment.

This role is not suited to candidates whose experience has been limited to purely transactional processing without wider accounting ownership.

We operate a hybrid working model with 3 days of working from home per week. This role is based in the Cape Town or Johannesburg office.

Please note that this position will be supporting the UK region and therefore, working hours are 08:30 - 17:00 UK time aligned to Daylight Savings.

Responsibilities:

  • Own routine accounting activities across tenant, supplier, purchase ledger and general ledger processes, including journals, receipts, charges, corrections and ledger maintenance.

  • Prepare bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules for assigned properties, investigating and resolving routine reconciling items.

  • Support month-end and year-end close activities, including accruals, prepayments, working papers and routine financial reporting deliverables.

  • Produce accurate, client-ready financial outputs and maintain audit-ready supporting documentation.

  • Support tenant accounting, aged debt review and routine credit control follow-up where required within the client scope.

  • Support purchase ledger activities, including invoice coding, supplier statement reconciliations and payment support where applicable.

  • Assist with service charge processes such as budgets, recharge calculations, void recoveries and year-end reconciliations, depending on portfolio complexity and experience.

  • Respond professionally to routine client and internal queries, identify risks early and escalate complex accounting, service charge or system matters appropriately.

  • Support portfolio onboarding activities, including data validation, lease or tenant checks and opening balance setup.

Key Requirements:

  • Must be able to work UK-aligned hours and South African public holidays, with UK bank holidays observed instead.

  • Typically 4  7 years of experience in property accounting or a related finance role with exposure to reconciliations, month-end routines, ledgers and financial reporting support.

  • Direct property accounting experience is preferred. Candidates from bookkeeping, credit control or service charge backgrounds must demonstrate broader accounting ownership beyond purely transactional processing.

  • Working knowledge of core accounting principles, including journals, reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, ledger control and financial reporting support.

  • Ability to work independently on routine accounting tasks, manage deadlines and prioritise effectively while escalating complex or high-risk matters appropriately.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with confidence handling routine client and internal queries professionally; prior client-facing experience is required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field.

  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and a dependable, adaptable approach to delivery.

Who will succeed in this role:

  • You are confident managing routine accounting work independently, but you know when to escalate more complex, high-risk or technically sensitive issues.

  • You have a solid grounding in reconciliations, journals, ledgers and month-end support, and you take pride in producing accurate, audit-ready work.

  • You are organised, dependable and able to manage multiple deadlines without losing attention to detail.

  • You communicate clearly and professionally with both clients and colleagues, and you have prior experience handling routine client-facing interactions, queries, updates and follow-ups in a professional services, finance or property environment.

  • You are comfortable working in systems and adapting to structured processes, while still showing initiative in identifying issues and improving the quality of your work.

  • You will likely be most successful if you already have direct property accounting experience, but candidates from bookkeeping, credit control or service charge backgrounds can also thrive where they bring broader accounting exposure and a clear readiness to step into a fuller Property Accountant role.

Nice to have:

  • Experience using MRI Software applications such as Qube, Horizon or PMX.

  • Familiarity with UK property accounting cycles, including service charge, VAT and year-end processes.

  • Understanding of UK property management and lease administration processes.

  • Experience in a client-facing property finance, managed services or outsourced accounting environment.
