Job Description

The City of Walnut Creek is seeking an experienced and collaborative Production Services Supervisor to work closely with Lesher Center and Center REP staff to manage a variety of productions. This staff will lead the technical theater team to ensure a high-quality production experience for Lesher Center events, including rental clients.

Salary
As of July 1, 2026, the salary range for the Lesher Center Production Services Supervisor (formal job class of Program Supervisor) will be $114,237 to $137,513 annually. Placement in the salary range will depend on qualifications.

About the Division
The Lesher Center for the Arts and Center Repertory Company are programs of the City of Walnut Creek’s Arts + Recreation Department.

The mission of the Lesher Center is to drive excellence, innovation, and diversity in the arts through performances, exhibitions and educational programming that establish the Lesher Center as the artistic destination for everyone in Walnut Creek and the region.

The Lesher Center, which includes three (3) theater spaces, presents events from its resident programs and supports approximately 90 event producers who rent the space each year. Together these programs present more than 800 productions and events a year, including a curated selection of visual art exhibitions at the Bedford Gallery, which collectively attracts more than 350,000 patrons.

Center REP is the resident professional theatre company of the Lesher Center with a season of five (5) to six (6) productions a year — a variety of musicals, dramas and comedies, both classic and contemporary, that continually strive to reach new levels of artistic excellence and professional standards. The company operates on an Actors’ Equity Association LOA/LORT D Contract and hires both union and non-union actors, designers, and directors.

Ideal Candidate Statement
The ideal candidate for Lesher Center Production Services Supervisor has a breadth of technical experience in theatrical lighting, sound, projection, and rigging for performance genres including Music, Theatre, and Dance. Their professional experience within a producing, repertory, or presenting arts organization will include supervision of technical theater staff, advancement of technical needs for complex productions, and leadership of facility improvements that relate to technical theater.Reporting to the Lesher Center General Manager, the Production Services Supervisor’s primary areas of focus include (and are not limited to) the following duties:
  • Assists in the scheduling and operation of facilities; schedules technical crews and advises theater users in their use of a facility; assists in the planning of performing arts programs and related community events.
  • Advises community and commercial organizations in the technical coordination of drama, musical theater, film, and concert activities; plans, schedules, and coordinates technical rehearsals and equipment needed for each production or event.
  • Develops and submits recommendations on the program budget; assists in preparing, developing, and monitoring the program budget; approves expenditures within defined parameters; supervises the maintenance of and accounting for City equipment and materials and approves requisitions for required materials and supplies; may oversee the collection and accounting of monies by those supervised; maintains program records.
  • Recruits, screens, and recommends for hire; trains, schedules, and supervises full-time, part-time, and temporary personnel, contractors, and volunteers; reviews timecards for accuracy; maintains schedules and attendance records; assists in the supervision of assigned departmental clerical staff.
  • Develops work plans and objectives consistent with program goals and Department mission; evaluates the effectiveness of assigned programs and recommends changes to improve quality and service delivery; assists in the formulation and implementation of program policy; assists in the development of new programs and sources of support.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidates will have the following: 

  • Considerable knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of program administration, development, and implementation.
  • Considerable knowledge of the techniques associated with theatrical production and performance operation including set design and construction, lighting, and sound.
  • Considerable knowledge of the facilities, resources, and equipment necessary for arts programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and related safety precautions associated with assigned duties.
  • Ability to perform supervisory tasks including scheduling, training, directing, supervising, and evaluating the performance of employees, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Some knowledge of municipal budgetary and purchasing practice.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, with major coursework in theater production or a related field, and a minimum of three years of experience in the area of assignment such as theater production and presentation, public facility operation and maintenance, and audience services; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the job classification.

Special Requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a good driving record.


Work hours may vary in accordance with the program being offered and therefore, this employee may be required to respond to calls for emergency assistance during off-duty hours.
