Job Purpose
The Principal Instrumentation & Control Designer is responsible for leading the instrumentation design and drafting activities across Oil & Gas projects, ensuring technical accuracy, compliance with project specifications, international standards, client requirements, and timely delivery. The role involves hands-on expertise in 2D and 3D design tools, coordination with multidisciplinary teams including support offices, and mentoring of designers.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership
- Lead and manage all Instrumentation & Control design and drafting activities throughout the project lifecycle (Detailed Design, and EPC).
- Interpret and implement project specifications, design criteria, standards, and client requirements.
- Guide and review work performed by instrumentation designers and draftsmen to ensure quality and consistency.
- Act as the focal point for Instrumentation design coordination with Engineering, Electrical, Process, Mechanical, Civil, and Telecom disciplines.
- 2D Design & Drafting
- Develop, check, and approve 2D drawings using AutoCAD including but not limited to:
- Control System Architecture Diagram.
- Instrument Cable Block Diagrams.
- Block Diagram.
- Loop Diagrams.
- Wiring Diagrams.
- Hook-Up Drawings.
- Instrument Installation Drawings.
- Instrument Location Layouts.
- Cable Routing Drawings.
- MCT Layouts.
- Control Room layouts.
- Ensure drawings comply with project standards, applicable international codes, and client specifications.
- Develop, check, and approve 2D drawings using AutoCAD including but not limited to:
- 3D Modeling & Model Management
- Lead 3D modeling activities using SP3D / E3D for Instrumentation scope.
- Develop and review:
- Instrument and JB modeling.
- Cable tray and routing interface.
- Instrument supports and mounting arrangements.
- Coordinate with other disciplines to resolve clashes and ensure model integrity.
- Participate in model reviews, constructability reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
- Project Execution & Coordination
- Plan, assign, and monitor design activities to meet project schedules and milestones.
- Interface with Project Engineering, Project Management, Construction, and client representatives.
- Support responses to technical queries (TQs), site queries, and design changes.
- Provide input for material take-offs (MTO), estimates, and project schedules.
- Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Implement and adhere to company and project Quality Assurance / Quality Control procedures.
- Ensure all deliverables are checked, approved, and issued as per document control procedures.
- Support audits, design reviews, and lessons-learned processes.
- Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Apply HSE requirements in the design process, with focus on safe and operable plant layouts.
- Promote safe work practices and compliance with project HSE objectives.
Identify design-related hazards and support risk mitigation.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education
- Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Instrumentation & Control / Electrical / Applied Engineering or equivalent technical qualification.
- Experience
- Relevant years’ experience as an Instrumentation & Control Designer in Oil & Gas EPC projects.
- Proven experience working on Middle East Oil & Gas projects.
- Demonstrated experience in handling client interfaces and multidisciplinary coordination.

- Software Proficiency
- 2D Drafting:

- MicroStation
- 3D Modeling:
- SP3D
- AVEVA (E3D)
- Experience with model reviews, clash detection, and database-driven engineering environments.
- 2D Drafting:
Technical Expertise
- Full understanding of Instrumentation & Control systems in Oil & Gas facilities.
- Knowledge of international standards and codes for instrumentation design.
- Experience in preparation and checking of deliverables for EPC phases.
