Position Summary

The Manager of Instructors is a people‑leader and operational manager responsible for directing, developing, and supporting a team of technical instructors. This role ensures the consistent delivery of high‑quality training while building instructor capability, standardizing processes, and serving as a growing Subject Matter Expert (SME) in AVO course content.

This position requires strong management experience, the ability to learn complex technical material quickly, and the confidence to represent AVO as a knowledgeable resource to clients, internal stakeholders, and leadership. The ideal candidate combines operational discipline, coaching skills, and technical curiosity with the ability to scale instructor performance as the business grows.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of instructors, fostering a professional, inclusive, and student‑focused culture.
  • Set clear performance expectations and conduct regular coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations.
  • Identify skill gaps and development opportunities; ensure instructors are continuously improving both technically and professionally.
  • Oversee instructor recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing certification or qualification requirements.
  • Serve as an escalation point for instructor, student, or client concerns.

Instructor Operations & Program Management

  • Own instructor scheduling, resource allocation, and instructional assignments across in‑person, hosted, on‑site, and virtual courses.
  • Manage all Day 1 and final‑day course operations, ensuring consistency, quality, and compliance.
  • Review and approve instructor travel plans and expense reports.
  • Ensure backup coverage and act as instructor substitute when needed.
  • Maintain accountability for instructor deliverables, timelines, and assigned projects.

Content Oversight & SME Development

  • Review newly developed and updated AVO course materials for technical accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
  • Partner closely with curriculum development and technical teams to improve instructional content and delivery methods.
  • Actively build subject‑matter expertise across AVO course offerings, with the expectation of becoming a trusted internal and external SME.
  • Participate in client calls and sales discussions to provide technical insight and support course placement.

Quality, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Audit weekly student feedback and instructor evaluations to ensure training and instructional standards are met.
  • Ensure all training aligns with applicable industry standards and best practices (e.g., NFPA, NETA, IEEE, OSHA).
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, instructor efficiencies, and new training or revenue opportunities.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to support strategic growth initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Technical Education, or related field or equivalent industry experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical maintenance, power systems, substations, or related technical fields.
  • Demonstrated people management experience 5+ years, including coaching, performance management, and team development.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical safety practices and standards.
  • Ability to learn new technical material quickly and translate it into effective instructional guidance.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in a fast‑paced, operational environment with competing priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel, and expense/scheduling systems

Preferred

  • Previous experience managing instructors, trainers, or technical professionals.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70E, NFPA 70B, NETA, IEEE, OSHA, ASTM, ANSI standards.
  • Experience contributing to or reviewing technical curriculum or training materials.
  • Comfort serving as a client‑facing technical resource.
