Job Description

Thank you for your interest in Charcoalblue. We are seeking an early career Audiovisual Consultant to join our Theater Consulting team in the Americas.

Within Charcoalblue, the Theatre Consulting Americas (TCAM) Business Unit provides design consulting in the areas of theatre planning, theatre design, and technical systems design for a variety of project typologies. Our Americas team spans across New York, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Southern California, and the San Francisco Bay Area. 

You will report to an Associate Director or Director in the U.S. who will manage project assignments and workload.

Job Description

You will be responsible for all aspects of design, documenting, and commissioning AV systems on our projects, working as part of our project teams which can include theatre designers, lighting designers, stage equipment designers, and acousticians to deliver holistic, client-focused design solutions.  

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the design, documentation, and delivery of audiovisual systems across a range of project types.

  • Coordinate with theatre, lighting, stage equipment, acoustic, architectural, and engineering teams to deliver integrated design solutions.

  • Meet with clients and project teams to understand AV needs, project goals, budgets, and building impacts.

  • Develop conceptual AV system solutions, narratives, budgets, drawings, BIM documentation, and specifications.

  • Communicate AV system functionality and design intent clearly to clients, designers, technicians, engineers, and other stakeholders.

  • Assist with cost estimating, value engineering, and design revisions while clearly identifying impacts to performance and functionality.

  • Participate in site visits for existing conditions review, construction progress, commissioning, witness testing, and related project needs.

  • Work with Team Leaders to define project work plans, deliverables, and priorities.

  • Contribute to the development of Charcoalblue’s internal design standards, technical resources, and knowledge sharing.

  • Serve as a developing resource within the team for audiovisual technologies relevant to our projects.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential Skills:

  • Minimum experience of two (2) years working as an audiovisual systems designer; likely in some combination of performing arts and architecture.

  • Served as primary audiovisual systems designer for completed projects in the design, documentation, construction, and commissioning phases

  • Can demonstrate the creation of contract documentation for the audiovisual systems on new construction or architectural renovation projects in North America.

  • The ability to self-manage and set work plans for the successful delivery of work against deadlines with minimal input from management.

  • Familiarity with the standard suite of Microsoft Office products is essential.

  • Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and / or Bluebeam.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Experience with computer-aided drafting/design (CAD). Proficiency in REVIT, or the ability to quickly learn and apply it, is required.

Desirable Skills:

  • An expert level of detailed knowledge about audiovisual technology and systems integration.

  • A practical knowledge of audio and acoustic theory, as well as visual media fundamentals.

  • Experience and interest in live performance, broadcast, and/or events.

  • CTS certification is a plus but not required.

Working Hours

The role is being offered on an 'at will', non-exempt basis at 40 hours per week.

As an international organization, the needs of the business are as such that this role requires a flexibility in working hours (which can be variable from week to week) to facilitate project demands and maintain support across our global entities’ varying time-zones. Working hours patterns will be agreed with your line manager to suit your personal circumstances and the current project load.

The role is subject to a three-month probationary period.

Location

We are currently working in a distributed hybrid model, meaning you will be able to work from your home (or other place of your choosing). Travel within the US and occasional travel internationally for projects and/or team building will also be required, with advance notice.  

Take-What-You-Need (TWYN) Leave

Team members have no ‘cap’ on the number of days they wish to take in any one year. This means you can plan holiday or vacation time or request time when you need it, without the worry of running out of leave days. TWYN leave requests must follow policy guidelines and team members are encouraged to use a minimum of 15 days of paid time off per year (prorated in the first year), in addition to federal and some local public holidays.

Charcoalblue traditionally closes its studios between Christmas and New Year’s Day, resulting in an additional 4-5 discretionary paid vacation days each year.

  • Following successful completion of the insurance waiting period, you will be eligible to join our company healthcare plan for the duration of your employment.

  • Following completion of your three (3) month probationary period, you will receive an allowance for live event tickets each month in line with our policy limits, to keep current with our industry.

  • Charcoalblue operates a bonus plan which you will benefit from following successful completion of a three (3) month probationary period. Please note that this is subject to the company's performance year-on-year and is not guaranteed.

  • You will receive regular check-ins with your line manager to enable you to succeed in the role.

Salary

The salary range for this role is USD 70,000 – 108,000 per year.
