Cardiac Anesthesiologist
Job Description
Choose Your Cases. Shape Your Schedule. Practice with Autonomy.
Location: Rochester, NY (multiple hospitals and surgical centers nearby)
Organization: Rochester Regional Health
Position Type: Full-Time
Cardiac Anesthesiologist
At Rochester Regional Health, our anesthesiologists provide comprehensive perioperative care across a wide range of surgical specialties in a collaborative, physician-led environment. We are seeking a fellowship-trained Cardiac Anesthesiologist to join our growing and highly specialized cardiac program.
This position offers substantial cardiac case exposure, flexibility in case selection, and a supportive call structure designed with long-term sustainability in mind. Physicians benefit from a practice model that combines the autonomy and flexibility often associated with private practice with the stability of an integrated health system.
Position Summary
The Cardiac Anesthesiologist provides high-quality anesthesia care for patients undergoing cardiac, thoracic, vascular, and general surgical procedures. Physicians practice at the top of their training in both personally performed and supervisory care models, with flexibility in case selection through our physician-driven scheduling system.
Cardiac anesthesiologists typically spend approximately 60–70% of their clinical time performing cardiac and thoracic anesthesia, while maintaining the option to participate in general anesthesia cases based on individual preference and departmental needs.
Clinical Responsibilities
Provide anesthesia care for complex cardiac surgical procedures, including:
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
Valve repair and replacement
Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement
Minimally invasive valve and CABG procedures
Support structural heart and hybrid procedures including:
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
MitraClip
Watchman procedures
Additional responsibilities include:
Providing anesthesia for the majority of thoracic procedures
Supporting high-complexity vascular cases
Participating in a predominantly personally performed cardiac anesthesia model
Collaborating with highly experienced cardiac CRNAs as the department continues to thoughtfully expand its cardiac care team model
General Anesthesia Responsibilities
Provide anesthesia services across a broad range of surgical specialties
Participate in daily case assignments through an equitable physician pick system that allows flexibility to select either cardiac or general assignments
Supervise CRNAs and/or personally perform cases as appropriate
Deliver comprehensive perioperative care including preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management, and postoperative assessment
The physician scheduling model offers a unique level of autonomy and flexibility rarely found in employed practice settings.
Call Structure
We recognize the importance of balancing subspecialty practice with a manageable and sustainable call model.
Cardiac Call
One weekday cardiac anesthesia call per week (from home)
One cardiac anesthesia weekend call approximately every 5–8 weeks (from home)
Heart call activation rate is approximately 10%
Because heart call is home-based with a low activation rate, post-call days are not routinely scheduled. However, physicians who are called in overnight are prioritized for relief as early as possible the following day.
General Overnight Call
Cardiothoracic anesthesiologists take reduced in-house overnight general anesthesia call responsibilities — approximately once per month — in exchange for participation in home cardiac call
In-house overnight calls are general anesthesia calls and do not include cardiac anesthesia responsibilities
Guaranteed post-call day off following overnight in-house call shifts
