Underwriting Assistant, ExcessSedona Risk Partners, one of Novacore's 20+ specialty insurance programs, is seeking an organized, detail-oriented, and service-minded professional to join as Underwriting Assistant. This role supports the full Sedona underwriting team across all five specialty verticals and plays a critical part in keeping the operation running efficiently as the program grows.
The Underwriting Assistant is the operational backbone of Sedona's underwriting function — managing submission intake, broker communications, policy documentation, and rating support so that underwriters can focus on risk selection and portfolio management. This is a highly visible role with direct interaction with retail brokers, underwriters, and senior leadership.
Sedona is designed to address structural inefficiencies in the excess casualty market — including excess capital competing for underperforming risks, limited underwriting differentiation, and escalating social inflation and nuclear verdict exposure.
Sedona deploys specialized underwriting expertise and data-driven risk selection to build resilient specialty portfolios across five verticals: Transportation, Construction, Life Sciences, Energy, and National Accounts. The firm emphasizes disciplined growth, efficient capital deployment, and long-term profitability for its insurance and reinsurance partners.
Responsibilities
Submission Management
- Retrieve incoming submissions from broker portals, email, and other channels across all Sedona verticals (Transportation, Construction, Life Sciences, Energy, and National Accounts).
- Log, organize, and upload submissions into Sedona's underwriting platforms accurately and in a timely manner.
- Track submission status and ensure all required documentation is complete before routing to the underwriting team.
- Maintain organized records of submissions, quotes, binders, policies, endorsements, and renewals within Sedona's systems.
Broker Communications
- Serve as the primary point of contact for retail brokers on operational and transactional matters, providing timely, professional, and accurate responses.
- Communicate with brokers regarding submission requirements, quote status, binder issuance, policy delivery, endorsement requests, and renewal timelines.
- Follow up proactively with brokers to obtain missing information, outstanding documents, and expiring binders.
- Maintain a positive and responsive broker experience that reflects Sedona's commitment to service and professionalism.
Rating & Technical Support
- Assist underwriters with manual rating and loss rating verification as required, ensuring accuracy and consistency with approved rating methodologies.
- Review and reconcile loss runs, exposure data, and rating worksheets to support underwriter analysis.
- Flag discrepancies in submitted data or rating inputs and communicate findings to the appropriate underwriter.
Underwriting Team & Leadership Support
- Provide broad administrative and operational support to Sedona's underwriters and senior leadership across all verticals.
- Assist with the preparation and quality control of quotes, binders, policy documents, and endorsements prior to delivery.
- Support the tracking of key deadlines including binder expirations, policy issuance, and renewal dates.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives as Sedona builds out its operational infrastructure.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the underwriting team and firm-wide objectives.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting excess casualty business in an underwriting, operations, or related insurance role.
- Familiarity with commercial lines insurance products, policy documents, and industry terminology.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a professional and service-oriented approach to broker interactions.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in data entry, document management, and correspondence.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfort working within digital underwriting and workflow platforms.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaboration with a team in a hybrid office environment.
Preferred
- Experience in excess and surplus lines, specialty insurance, or an MGA/MGU environment.
- Experience with large-account commercial casualty or specialty insurance operations.
- Experience with manual rating, loss rating, or actuarial support functions.
- Familiarity with broker portal platforms and electronic submission systems.
- Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU), CPCU coursework, or other relevant insurance designations.
