As a key member of our clinical laboratory, you would be responsible for the preparation of all surgical and autopsy specimens for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge includes the use of specialized instrumentation, IHC and special staining techniques, quality control requirements, and preventive maintenance. Responsible for the oversight of all routine histology and immunohistochemical (IHC) technical functions. This includes staining procedures, quality control, the work up of new antibodies, the set up and maintenance of instrumentation and the implementation of new procedures. Works with Manager to provide technical, financial, and regulatory oversight as assigned.
What you will do:
Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures.
Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples; tissue processing; as well as processing paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
Ensure proper tissue processing. Perform microtomy of embedded tissue.
Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining. Perform coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated. Prepare solutions and reagents for special stain procedures.
Maintains adequate tissue bank to supply IHC and special stain tissue controls as needed.
Perform special stain and IHC procedures.
Participates in evaluating and implementing new histology and IHC instrumentation.
Participates in development and ensures completion of competency testing for assigned staff per departmental requirements (routine histology and IHC).
Able to identify and troubleshoot spurious routine histology and IHC staining reactions. Able to troubleshoot histology and IHC instrument malfunction and documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
Provide training and guidance to new employees, and students.
Position Hours:
40 hours, Nights: 11:00 pm - 7 am, Monday - Friday. Must be available on day shift for EPIC Training
Minimum Requirements:
Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both) AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years; OR Must have at least 5 years of experience as a Histotechnologist.
HTL ASCP required; Qualification in IHC (QIHC) by ASCP
Must have experience in the following areas: Fixation, Microtomy, Processing, Staining, IHC staining, IHC optimization and validation. Unless otherwise required by certification, licensure, or registration, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibilities listed in this description may be substituted for the minimally required education and/or experience listed in the Qualifications section noted above.
