The Opportunity
McElhanney has an opportunity for Survey Crew Lead, to join our team in Edmonton, with the primary focus on legal/boundary surveys.
We have multiple projects in Edmonton and surrounding area that you could be involved in relating to roads, subdivisions, lease areas, pipelines, wellsites and various other legal surveys.
This is a great opportunity for an individual looking to stay close to home, as most of the work would be Edmonton based, as well as develop their career in Surveying with a well-established Survey and Engineering Consultancy.
Opportunities exist both locally in Edmonton and surrounding area.
Numerous projects with a variety of different survey requirements.
McElhanney has industry leading capabilities in Surveying, Scanning, RPAS/UAV operations, Bathymetry, LiDAR and remote sensing, line locating and GIS, offering the opportunity to learn new, and apply existing skills on multidisciplinary projects.
Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing is required, as well as pre-site access testing as per client requirements.
Class 5 Driving license is Mandatory
What You Can Expect
Increase your knowledge on the principles and fundamental use of survey instruments by working with experienced land surveyors willing to share knowledge and experience.
McElhanney looks to train Junior Party Chiefs to become Senior Party Chiefs.
Develop skills in reading and interpreting titles, surveys, construction plans and other technical documents.
Work in a team environment that respects the skills and abilities of the individual and that encourages development.
Work alongside other disciplines of engineering and survey within the firm.
What You’ll Be Doing
Set-up and operate a range of survey equipment.
Performing correct surveying methods, documenting survey work on field notes and submitting data to the office.
Using tools and equipment to perform field activities that are required to complete boundary surveys such as placing or searching for stakes, marks, control points and other survey monuments or to identify buried utilities or survey monuments.
Field completion of surveys for Geomatics and Engineering projects, including property corner identification, boundary monumentation (roads, subdivisions, and new developments) evidence searches, and topographic surveys.
Work with the latest generation of instruments as well as emerging technologies.
Work with Project Managers to understand project objectives, budgets, goals, schedules, and timeframes.
Expand upon, or develop, processing and calculating skills to gain a broader knowledge of survey operations.
Where appropriate work semi autonomously to manage surveying tasks, fully supported by a project team.
Ensure implementation of quality assurance, safety, and policy compliance.
What You’ll Bring:
Ability to demonstrate a proactive approach to health and safety including hazard identification and mitigation techniques.
Two-year technical diploma in Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or relatable subject with at least 2 years of previous experience in a similar role. A higher level of experience in surveying, construction or engineering will be considered if no diploma is held.
Competence in the fundamentals and use of Total stations is a necessity.
A strong work ethic and willingness to learn and share knowledge.
Physical ability to work on varied terrain, potentially over long days and the ability to lift heavy equipment.
Experience operating UTVs, ATVs, and snowmobiles
A fundamental understanding of Line Locating and working around buried utilities.
Experience with Civil 3D, MicroSurvey and Trimble Business Centre is an asset (but not required)
Valid driver’s license is required
This role is designated as a safety sensitive position.

The salary range for this position is $28 - $44 per hour. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
