Job Description
Performs a variety of building maintenance and grounds work including but not limited to painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, A/C repairs, and maintaining grounds in a clean, neat, and safe manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs interior and exterior household repairs.
- Works with interior and exterior household paint; repairs drywall, paints interior and exterior of building(s) or home(s).
- Decides the amount of materials needed to perform repairs and maintenance work on new and existing projects.
- Performs carpentry repairs; installs doors, replaces doors and window frames, utility rooms, and cabinets.
- Inspects and repairs air-conditioning and heating systems, refrigerators for domestic homes and apartments.
- Inspects, repairs, and installs electrical and gas boilers.
- Repairs and installs plumbing equipment; repairs water lines; unclogs drain lines and repairs other related plumbing components.
- Reads and uses test meters to measure electric current and uses air conditioning gages.
- Performs trouble-shooting work; repairs electrical equipment and wiring in homes and apartments.
- Performs the cleaning and operating of equipment, such as: spray paint guns, riding mowers, and other related mechanical equipment.
- Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors, and other business contacts.
- Must follow all rules of telephone courtesy in all telephone communications.
- Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of hand tools, small power tools, and mechanical and/or plumbing equipment
- Ability to perform HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning) maintenance, repairs, and installation.
- Ability to repair drywall, paint interior, and exterior of building or home.
- Ability to apply wall texture.
- Ability to perform building maintenance and ground activities in a proficient and timely manner.
- Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.
- Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform work in a productive and safe manner.
- Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
- Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical Effort Requirements Position will have the following exposures- Office or similar indoor environment, relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.
- Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work.
- Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.
- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Required Education and Experience
At least one (1) year of general experience. Experience performing plumbing, painting, electrical, heating and air conditioning repair, and/or maintenance work is preferred.
- Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
