Maintenance Mechanic I
Public Works Division
Salary: $22.53 per hour Grade: 16
Position Summary
The City of Alabaster is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Mechanic to join our Public Works team. This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and corrective repairs on a wide variety of City-owned vehicles, equipment, and machinery. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to keeping essential public service equipment operating safely and efficiently.
Essential Job Duties
- Diagnose, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical systems on City equipment and vehicles
- Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on engines, motors, generators, and related equipment
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems efficiently and accurately
- Dismantle, repair, and reassemble electric motors and components
- Re-wire electrical panels and replace defective parts as needed
- Perform welding and fabrication tasks associated with equipment repairs
- Diagnose and repair gas and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including:
- Cars and trucks
- Tractors and mowers
- Heavy construction equipment
- Other City-owned vehicles and machinery
- Order and maintain inventory of necessary parts, materials, and tools
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records
- Ensure equipment is operating safely and in compliance with applicable standards
Essential Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent:
- Standing and walking
- Use of hands to operate tools and controls
- Reaching with hands and arms
- Talking and hearing
Occasional activities include:
- Sitting
- Climbing or balancing
- Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
Lifting Requirements:
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Vision Requirements:
- Close vision
- Distance vision
- Color vision
- Peripheral vision
- Depth perception
- Ability to adjust focus
Environmental Working Conditions
Employees in this position may be exposed to:
- Extreme heat and cold
- Moving mechanical parts
- Fumes, odors, and toxic chemicals
- Risk of electrical shock and vibration
- Loud noise environments
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Experience in automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, or industrial equipment repair preferred
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and welding systems preferred
- Valid driver’s license required
- CDL preferred or ability to obtain within designated timeframe
