
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Specialist
Job Description
- Trains and develops skills in using the approved EHR, Chart Prep, Nursing Procedures, Standing Orders / Labs, Patient Flow, Clinical Equipment, Exam Room Prep / Cleaning and Referral Tracking
- Will be expected to cover all New Horizon sites based on coverage needs.
- Must obey all established safety and driving / transportation rules and requirements before, during and after traveling to various sites.
- Provides instruction to staff on the location of, obtaining and disclosure of patient instructions and information on routine diagnostic procedures.
- Provides instruction to staff on basic patient/family education in uncomplicated health problems in accordance with the plan of care for the patient.
- Utilizes patient instructions and information on routine diagnostic lab testing.
- Participates in, and works with the Nursing and Clinical Support Services Director, HR Director and Practice Management Director in staff development programs required by NHFHS and area of practice.
- Participates in training with the Quality Department and Nursing and Clinical Support Services Director to prepare for training and precepting of staff in Patient Centered Medical Home required processes.
- Works with the Charge Nurses to complete Medical Assistant Training.
- Performs services and provides training on an assigned basis at places and times as directed by the supervisor.
- Helps support the achievement of provider productivity goals.
- Is responsible for daily patient phone messages.
- Cares for patients in accordance with instructions given by MD/Charge Nurse/DON.
- Obtains patient’s vital signs, works up patients according to EHR processes.
- Administers treatment as directed by the practitioner.
- Gives injections under the supervision and orders of a Medical Doctor.
- Performs duties per completion of MA Orientation Checklists.
- Understands the purpose of and has a working knowledge of Patient-Centered Medical Home concepts.
- Works with Tracking and Task Management team members to track outcomes for referrals, hospitalizations, pap smears, vouchers and other required information supporting Patient-Centered Medical Home guidelines.
- Participates in in-service training opportunities as required.
- Provides comfort and support to patients awaiting medical treatment / those having received medical attention.
- Assists in the maintenance of clean and safe examining rooms.

"Certified medical assistant" or "CMA" means a person who:
(1) has completed:
(a) a medical assisting education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or its successor, by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools or its successor, or by any accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education, and which must include courses or components in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, medical laboratory techniques, and clinical experience, provided the clinical experience component may be satisfied through an individual's work experience with a health care employer;
(b) a Career and Technical Education Health Sciences Program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education;
(c) a medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military;
(d) a medical assisting United States Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeship program; or
(e) a training program that is delivered, in whole or in part, by a health care employer that aligns to a nationally accredited certification exam; and - (2) a person who has complied with the provisions of subitem (1) and maintains current certification from a certifying body offering a certification program that is:
(a) approved by the Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Nursing; and
(b) is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or other accreditation body recognized by the Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Nursing.

- Three (3) years of outpatient primary care experience working as a medical assistant providing direct patient care
- Three (3) years of outpatient primary care experience working as a medical assistant providing direct patient care
- REQUIRED:
- OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must maintain a current and active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved provider, in accordance with organizational and position requirements. Certification must be obtained through a hybrid or in-person course offered by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
