General Summary
- The Nursing Shift Manager (NSM) is a professional Registered Nurse who assumes management responsibility for the Unit during a shift.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Promote compliance with patient safety, infection prevention, and regulatory standards while monitoring staff performance and providing coaching as needed.
- Provide clinical and operational leadership for the shift, maintaining OR circulator competency and supporting direct patient care when required.
- Coordinate daily operating room schedules, patient flow, case prioritization, and throughput to ensure efficient surgical operations.
- Monitor quality and performance metrics, conduct chart audits, and support quality improvement initiatives.
- Facilitate daily operational huddles and serve as the primary communication and escalation resource for perioperative staff and interdisciplinary teams.
- Develop and maintain staffing schedules, manage payroll processes, and adjust staffing levels based on patient volume and operational needs.
- Delegate responsibilities, promote accountability, and provide coaching and support to enhance staff performance, engagement, and professional development.
- Participate in recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding activities to support workforce development and retention.
- Maintain accurate operational records, staffing documentation, and required reports in accordance with organizational standards.
- Address patient and family concerns and lead service recovery efforts to support a positive patient experience.
Education
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred.
Work Experience
- One year of registered nursing experience preferred.
Certification/License
- Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact Licensure.
- Graduate nurses (GN) must obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support.
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
- Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
