Job Description

The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services.
San Jose Animal Care Services, a division in the Public Works Department, is currently seeking to hire one (1) part-time Graduate Student Intern (Medical) to assist in a full range of duties associated with the paraprofessional medical care and treatment of animals.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Checking and monitoring the health of animals, as well as rendering first aid and emergency treatment.
- Assisting shelter veterinarians in surgery, spay/neuter, and other medical procedures.
- Maintaining pharmaceutical and other medical supplies; cleaning of kennels/cages.
- Feeding and caring for animals.
- Humanely performing euthanasia, as required.
The salary range for this classification is $20.52– $30.30 hourly. This includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Education: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of a Bachelor's degree and current enrollment in a Master’s degree program from an accredited college or university in business or public administration or closely related field.
Current enrollment in a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) program or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is highly desirable.
Required Licensing: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required in performing job duties.
The Graduate Student Intern is also expected to possess the following additional qualifications and key abilities:
- Must have a willingness to learn and apply their academic training to the required job assignments
- Knowledge and ability to use computers and related applications
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to carry out oral instructions
- Ability to carry out written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to all the job specific questions.
