Job Description

We tackle the most complex problems in quantitative finance, by bringing scientific clarity to financial complexity.

From our London HQ, we unite world-class researchers and engineers in an environment that values deep exploration and methodical execution - because the best ideas take time to evolve.  Together we’re building a world-class platform to amplify our teams’ most powerful ideas.

G-Research runs one of the largest and most influential Open-Source Program Offices (OSPO) in the world, comprising 30 - 35 upstream engineers working across machine learning, big-data systems, high-performance computing (HPC), distributed systems, developer tooling and critical infrastructure.

Take the next step in your career.

The role

G-Research operates one of the world’s largest OSPO, partnering closely with projects such as Apache Arrow, Parquet, Polars, Kubernetes and LLVM. Our engineers deliver production-grade improvements that benefit both the wider open-source community and G-Research’s research, machine learning and platform teams.

We are hiring a Deputy Head of Open-Source Development to act as the senior in-office leader for the programme, ensuring our open-source contributions remain closely aligned with internal priorities and business needs.

This is a senior technical leadership role at the intersection of engineering, research and organisational strategy. Working closely with the Head of Open-Source Development, you will build relationships across the Research, Machine Learnin Engineering, Platform, Security, Legal, Architecture and Executive teams, helping to drive the adoption, alignment and understanding of the OSPO’s work across the firm.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Leading day-to-day engagement between the OSPO and internal stakeholders, ensuing alignment between open-source contributions and business priorities

  • Partnering with the Head of Open-Source Development to shape strategy, evaluate opportunities and prioritise work across Research, Machine Learning and Platform Engineering areas

  • Building trusted relationships across engineering, research, architecture and leadership teams

  • Identifying emerging technical needs and translating them into actionable open-source initiatives

  • Acting as a primary point of contact for new requests, managing requirements and stakeholder expectations

  • Evaluating technologies, proof of concepts and research tooling to assess suitability and adoption opportunities

  • Driving internal adoption of open-source contributions, gathering feedback and coordinating improvements

  • Promoting awareness of OSPO’s capabilities, impact and strategic value across the firm

  • Supporting governance, prioritisation, and portfolio management across the OSPO

  • Maintaining clear documentation, roadmaps and reporting to measure and communicate programme impact

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Strong engineering background across distributed systems, data platforms, machine learning, HPC infrastructure, developer tooling, or related domains

  • Experience reviewing or writing production-quality code, ideally in Python, C++, Java, Rust or Go

  • Ability to navigate complex codebases and understand architecture-level trade-offs

  • Excellent communication skills with ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels

  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical groups

  • Proven ability to operate in complex environments, influence without authority and manage competing priorities

  • Pragmatic and resilient approach with strong judgement and a passion for open source

Nice to have:

  • Experience contributing to open-source projects or communities

  • Experience in quantitative research, HPC, machine learning or regulated environments

Why you should apply

  • Highly competitive compensation plus annual discretionary bonus

  • Lunch provided (via Just Eat for Business) and dedicated barista bar

  • 30 days’ annual leave

  • 9% company pension contributions

  • Informal dress code and excellent work/life balance

  • Comprehensive healthcare and life assurance

  • Cycle-to-work scheme

  • Monthly company events
