Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Employees provide a variety of clinical and environmental laboratory services that aid in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in patients and clients of Guilford County. Laboratory services are provided within the Clinical, Community and Environmental Health Divisions of the Health Department. Some laboratory services are provided at off site locations. All laboratory services are coordinated and managed by the Medical Laboratory Manager. The Medical Laboratory Supervisor may supervise the technical aspect of the work.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Employees independently perform a variety of tests which cross several of the medical technological areas. Employees are expected to independently apply general knowledge, skills, and abilities of the work area and the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored on an on-going basis to provide clinical interface.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Tasks
• Employees are assigned to any of the following work areas employees may also rotate to off site locations (school locations, etc.). Microbiology, Hematology, Serology, Parasitology, Chemistry, Clinical Microscopy, Environmental Water Testing or Phlebotomy.
• Employees perform a variety of bench procedures in area of laboratory work where independence and judgment is exercised in performing tests.
• Employees must be able to troubleshoot, interpret and determine the significance of test results, and make recommendations for further laboratory studies.
• Employees may participate in training new laboratory staff in the operational procedures of the laboratory.
• Employees serve as a technical resource to other staff and clinicians.
• Employees participate in evaluating new equipment, methods, kits, and procedures; and participates in establishing and monitoring procedures and equipment, quality control and proficiency testing.
• Employees provide feedback to operational policies and established/new procedures as they relate to laboratory services.
RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• General theoretical knowledge of the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to the area(s) of work.
• General knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and terminology.
• General knowledge of the basic pathophysiciological processes being monitored and how the medical laboratory science is applied.
• Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and in the performance of procedures.
• Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to instruct medical technology students and other health professionals in laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college/university with a BS Degree in Medical Technology, OR an Associate Degree in Medical Technology and one year experience in a clinical laboratory setting, OR a BS Degree in Chemistry/Biology and two years experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
Certification
ASCP certification is preferred as a medical technologist, clinical laboratory scientist, medical laboratory technician or clinical laboratory technician from the appropriate certifying agency.
May Require Driving
This position may require driving for this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business such as but not limited to attending conferences, meetings, or any other county related functions. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
