About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your impact
As a Permit Technician in Crushing & Conveying, you will play a critical role in protecting people, equipment, and operations by ensuring all work is executed safely and in full compliance with Permit to Work (PTW) Processes supporting operational efficiency.
You will be the gatekeeper of safety and risk control, ensuring hazards are identified, assessed, and effectively mitigated before any task begins. Your contribution directly supports safe production, operational reliability, and Newmont’s Zero Harm commitment, making you an essential part of site success.

As part of our team, you will
- Administer and control Permit to Work systems, ensuring all permits are prepared, issued, and closed in line with site procedures and compliance standards
- Coordinate isolations and LOTO processes, verifying they are applied, tested, and safe before work begins
- Conduct field inspections to confirm hazards are identified, controlled, and work areas are safe prior to permit approval
- Collaborate closely with maintenance, operations, and electrical teams to optimise plant availability while maintaining safety
- Ensure accuracy of safety documentation, including JSA/JHAs, isolation certifications, and high-risk work permits
- Maintain isolation registers and permit records, ensuring transparency and accountability across shutdown and operational work
- Monitor active work areas to ensure compliance with permit conditions and safe work practices at all times
- Support continuous improvement and safety culture, stepping in to stop work where conditions are unsafe
Prerequisites for your success in this role
To thrive in this position, you are detail-oriented, safety-driven, and confident working in a dynamic operational environment.
You will also bring:
• Experience in crushing, conveying, or processing plant environments, with strong exposure to maintenance and operations interfaces
• Proven knowledge of Permit to Work systems, isolations, and LOTO procedures
• Strong hazard identification and risk assessment capability, with a commitment to safe outcomes
• Ability to work under pressure with high attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in safety-critical documentation
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams
• A proactive, team-oriented mindset, with a calm, adaptable and approachable style
• A willingness to learn and grow, with opportunities to progress into supervisory or broader operational roles
Desirable:
• Certificate or Diploma in Process Operations, Mining, Mechanical, Safety or related discipline
• Familiarity with SAP and MS Office systems
• Good verbal & written communication skills
• Self-motivated & positive with the ability to work autonomously from time to time.
• Recognizes problems and proactively works towards resolution under the guidance of immediate Supervisor.
• Strong active listening & interpersonal skills.
Your work environment
Based on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea, you will be part of a collaborative, safety-first operations team working across crushing and conveying circuits. You’ll engage daily with maintenance crews, electrical teams, and operations personnel, playing a central role in aligning shutdown activities, managing risks, and supporting production delivery. This environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, where success relies on strong communication, trust, and shared accountability for safety and performance.
Working Conditions
This role is offered on a 21:21 day shift only Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea.
Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
