Job Description

Position:       Adapted PE Teacher

Location:      District Wide

Start Date:  August 31, 2026   

 

Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher to join our school district's team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in adapted physical education and special education practices, with the ability to provide developmentally appropriate instruction to students with disabilities across multiple grade levels. As an APE Teacher within our district, you will play a vital role in promoting physical development, fitness, motor skills, social interaction, and lifelong wellness for a diverse student population.

Responsibilities:

1. Curriculum / Instructional Planning and Implementation

  • Develop and implement individualized and developmentally appropriate adapted physical education lesson plans in accordance with district curriculum, state standards, and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, adaptations, and equipment to meet diverse learning styles and individual student needs.
  • Modify activities, environments, rules, and equipment to ensure equitable access to physical education instruction.
  • Promote a safe, supportive learning environment conducive to individual and small-group instruction.
  • Coordinate with general education teachers, special education staff, therapists, and other professionals to evaluate, assess, and support student progress.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, IEP meetings, committees, and collaborative planning sessions.

2. Classroom and Program Management

  • Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
  • Implement effective behavior management strategies consistent with students' behavior plans and district expectations.
  • Ensure student conduct aligns with school standards and district policies while fostering independence and self-confidence.
  • Maintain safe instructional practices at all times, including appropriate supervision and use of equipment.

3. Assessment and Feedback

  • Assess students' physical, motor, and functional abilities using formal and informal assessment tools.

  • Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.

  • Provide meaningful feedback to students, families, and the IEP team.

  • Organize and maintain accurate records for assessment, progress reporting, attendance, and compliance with district procedures and applicable laws.

4. Parent and Guardian Communication

  • Foster open, effective communication with parents and guardians through conferences, written reports, and other communication channels.
  • Collaborate with families to support students' physical, social, and emotional development.

 

5. Professional Development

  • Participate in ongoing professional development to remain current with best practices in adapted physical education, instructional strategies, and educational trends.
  • Attend workshops, seminars, faculty meetings, and department or grade-level meetings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and enhance the overall educational experience for students.

6. Other Duties

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal, central office administrators, or Superintendent.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and NYS Certification in Physical Education.
  • Strong knowledge of physical education curriculum, instructional strategies, and motor development.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a genuine passion for working with students with disabilities.
  • Ability to create a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment.
