Job Description
The Consumer Loan Originator is responsible for delivering exceptional service to internal and external members while proactively soliciting, originating, and capturing new consumer loans and deposit products. This role provides expert guidance throughout the loan application process—using strong credit knowledge, sales skills, and financial expertise to structure high quality, member focused loan solutions. The Consumer Loan Originator works within the credit union’s sales culture, serving as a knowledgeable resource, handling escalated inquiries, and contributing to the department’s overall loan production and service excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Loan Sales & Origination
- Assist applicants with loan applications submitted via phone, web channels, or internal referrals.
- Proactively seek, identify, and capture new consumer loan opportunities through outbound follow up and relationship building.
- Structure high performing loan products that benefit both the member and the credit union.
- Evaluate collateral applicability, determine collateral value, and calculate maximum loan amounts.
- Maintain strong knowledge of credit reports and scoring models; communicate actionable credit improvement tips to members.
- Consistently achieve or exceed sales goals through strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and objection handling.
- Clearly communicate underwriting philosophies, lending decisions, approval stipulations, loan products, checking accounts, and ancillary offerings.
- Provide timely, professional, and accurate information to internal and external members.
Member Experience & Communication
- Maintain professionalism in all interactions and represent the credit union with a positive, member focused attitude.
- Build rapport with members, teammates, and credit union staff to support a collaborative environment.
- Respond to escalated member concerns and resolve complex loan related inquiries with minimal supervision.
- Serve as a mentor and knowledge resource for Loan Officer I’s, contributing to team learning and consistency.
Operational Responsibilities
- Adhere to all consumer lending compliance guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality of all member information and credit union matters.
- Demonstrate strong decision making skills, balancing risk, member needs, and credit union guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records, documentation, and system notes for all loan interactions.
- Participate actively in required training, coaching sessions, and development opportunities.
- Embrace feedback and demonstrate self awareness in skill development.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Shift: Monday-Friday 9:00am-6:00pm; Rotating Saturdays 10:00am-2:00pm
Required Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent (associate degree in business, finance, or related field preferred but not required).
- Job related specialized training is encouraged.
Required Knowledge
- Strong understanding of consumer lending practices, including collateral requirements, credit underwriting basics, and loan structuring.
- Knowledge of state and federal consumer lending regulations (e.g., Truth in Lending, Fair Lending, Red Flags).
- Understanding of credit reports, credit scoring factors, and the ability to explain credit improving strategies.
- Familiarity with loan documentation requirements, verification processes, and lending workflows.
- Awareness of deposit products and the ability to cross sell based on member needs.
Experience Required
- Three to five years of consumer lending and/or deposit sales experience.
- Demonstrated, documentable track record of sales success in a lending or financial services environment.
- Experience using loan origination systems, financial calculators, and relevant computer systems.
- Experience resolving member issues, answering escalated inquiries, and working with minimal supervision.
Required Hard/Technical Skills
- Sales and Relationship Building Skills: Strong consultative sales skills with the ability to persuade, influence, and overcome objections. Ability to identify member needs and provide tailored financial solutions. Ability to build rapport and trust with members, dealerships and referral partners.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex lending concepts in a member friendly way. Skilled at active listening, asking clarifying questions, and delivering clear information.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to evaluate credit reports, identify risk indicators, and make informed recommendations. Strong judgment when structuring loans or determining collateral viability.
- LOS Skills: Proficiency with LOS platforms, document upload systems, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word). Ability to learn new systems, tools and processes.
- Organizational Skills: Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and record keeping. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced, goal driven environment. Professional demeanor, positive attitude, and commitment to the organization’s service culture.
- Service Orientation: Strong customer service orientation with a desire to help members reach financial goals. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly.
