Position Summary
The Senior Quality Engineer (Manufacturing Engineering) performs professional engineering work focused on the analysis, design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes and quality systems for automotive components. This role partners closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, and Product Development to ensure production processes meet engineering specifications, customer requirements, and applicable quality standards, including ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949.
This position applies engineering principles, statistical analysis, and structured problem‑solving methodologies to optimize process capability, reduce variation, improve product reliability, and lower the total cost of quality.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Analysis & Process Design
- Engineer, analyze, and continuously improve manufacturing processes to ensure product conformance, process capability, and long-term reliability.
- Conduct process capability studies (CPK, PPK) and statistical analyses to validate manufacturing tolerances and performance.
- Design, develop, and maintain Process FMEAs, Control Plans, and Process Flow Diagrams for all applicable manufacturing processes.
- Lead engineering support for New Product Introduction (NPI), including PPAP planning, risk mitigation, and production readiness assessments.
Quality Engineering & Continuous Improvement
- Apply engineering methodologies (8D, 5 Whys, PDCA, DMAIC) to lead root cause analysis of internal and customer quality issues.
- Engineer sustainable Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to eliminate recurrence and improve system robustness.
- Drive reduction of Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) through engineering analysis, failure mode reduction, and process optimization.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles.
Measurement Systems & Validation
- Engineer and validate inspection, test, and measurement systems, including Gage R&R and Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
- Ensure engineering integrity and statistical reliability of data used in production decision-making and PPAP submissions.
- Support engineering approval of production fixtures and tooling, including Poka‑Yoke (error-proofing) solutions.
Reporting, Systems & Collaboration
- Develop and maintain engineering-driven KPIs and quality performance metrics to analyze trends related to RMAs, nonconformances, and process stability.
- Prepare engineering reports comparing manufacturing performance against internal specifications and customer quality requirements.
- Participate in the maintenance and continuous improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Provide technical guidance and engineering training related to quality systems, process control, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited four-year university.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional engineering experience in manufacturing quality or process engineering.
- Demonstrated experience applying statistical methods and engineering principles in a manufacturing environment.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience working within ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949 quality management systems.
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) preferred.
- Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma certification (Green or Black Belt preferred).
- Strong proficiency in statistical analysis tools, including Minitab.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings using ASME Y14.5 / GD&T (formal training preferred).
- Experience with metal fabrication, bending, welding, automated manufacturing processes, and assembly operations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) with the ability to generate Pareto charts and engineering reports.
- Bilingual Spanish/English a plus.
