Job Description

The Director of Travel Plaza Operations will work with the General Manager of the Warm Springs Casino Enterprises to ensure the successful operations of the Plateau Travel Plaza Convenience Store and fuel operations. The Warm Springs Casino Enterprises (WSCE) is comprised of Indian Head Casino and the Plateau Travel Plaza.

The following include, but are not limited to essential functions of the position.

  • Creates and maintains a positive environment for patrons and employees.
  • Works with other WSCE Management to build a strong and profitable enterprise.
  • Provides guidance and leadership to grow sales, transactions, and profitability while creating a positive work environment that is accepting to motivated team members, that exceeds customer expectations, providing fast, accurate and friendly service in clean surroundings.
  • Oversees and directs the daily operational activities of the Plateau Travel Plaza Convenience Store and fuel operations.
  • Supervises, develops, and mentors employees including, but not limited to, hiring, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
  • Works with Purchasing and Receiving person to screen and interact with multiple vendors for the purchase of fuel and various kinds of merchandise.
  • Oversees and approves store merchandising including product layout, effective displays, receiving product, invoice, and inventory system management, and determining appropriate price levels for profitable business operations.
  • Understands proper receiving and invoice management and ensures that Purchasing/Receiving personnel follow all established procedures correctly.
  • Develops and executes action plans to address customer service, including developing and implementing service standards, staff training, staffing ratios, etc.
  • Encourages, assists, and trains employees through regular staff meetings, store walk-throughs and audits.
  • Observes employees and provides positive, constructive feedback on their performance.
  • Works with other Directors and the General Manger to build and develop a work atmosphere that encourages pride in teamwork and in providing excellent customer service.
  • Works with the Director of Finance and the General Manager to develop annual budgets, including forecasts for revenue, expenditures, and labor/staffing. Manages the approved budget in accordance with company fiscal management policy.
  • Reviews reports to analyze and improve projections of sales and profits to meet budget targets.
  • Works closely with the WSCE General Manager and other senior Management staff to develop and promote sound business practices and operational efficiency to attain the business goals of both casino enterprises.
  • Provides accurate and timely reports to the Accounting department on daily, weekly, and monthly business activity as required and/or requested.
  • Works with the Director of Finance, the Director of Facilities, the Director of Food & Beverage, the Director of Security, and the Director of Casino Operations in coordinating the maintenance and upkeep of the Plateau Travel Plaza, ensuring organized, clean, and sanitary conditions in all public and private areas.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Generates and provides reports as needed.
  • Provides a safe, secure environment for employees and guests, promptly addressing risks and hazards; ensures that all employees always follow safety practices.
  • Ensures compliance with IHC operating policies and procedures and applicable laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Works cooperatively with various departments providing support services such as IT, Marketing, Human Resources, and Finance.
  • Maintains familiarity with the correct procedures for handling Accounts Payable, fuel receiving, proprietary charge programs, loyalty programs, Marketing promotions, trucking fuel programs, and all other systems and services used and/or provided by the Plateau Travel Plaza.
  • Performs the duties of a Supervisor, Lead, Cashier, and/or Purchasing/Receiving, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the WSCE General Manager.

  • Financial Management: Expertise in overseeing day-to-day operations of a travel plaza, ensuring high levels of customer service, efficient processes, and optimal resource utilization. Skilled in managing budgets, controlling costs, and analyzing financial reports to drive profitability and achieve operational targets.

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Five (5) years of successful management experience in a position with direct responsibility for staffing, and developing, implementing, and managing budgets and business plans.
  • Experience with retail and truck stop POS systems.
  • Must be highly motivated, goal oriented and willing and able to make informed decisions.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public.
  • Must possess working knowledge of the accounting process, including financial statements, budgets, accounts receivables/payables and inventory as required.
  • Must have excellent computer skills with the ability to work with various software programs such as Microsoft basics—Word, Excel and Outlook and other software programs (inventory, POS, etc.)
  • Must have a flexible schedule and able to work outside the standard workweek as business needs dictate.
  • Thorough working knowledge of accounting, financial and auditing principles, and practices, as well as State, Federal and local laws, and regulations. Must be familiar with retail analytics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Business or related field.
  • Successful management of a high-volume truck stop with retail, and convenience store operations.

Certification(s) and/or Licenses Required

  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must submit to and pass a drug/alcohol screening test.
  • Must submit to and pass an Oregon State background investigation.

Work Environment

Normal Office – Job requires regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office. Position is sedentary with primarily sitting/lifting of maximum of 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant sitting, use of near vision, typing; frequent use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision, bending, driving; occasional standing, walking, carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, use of smell. Working conditions include some exposure to noise, vibration, air quality; occasional exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold and wet/humidity.

  • Some lifting and carrying is required. Lifting items weighing as much as 60 pounds may be required, but this should occur rarely, i.e., less than 15% of the time.
  • This position requires reaching, manipulating and keyboard operation (typing).
  • This position requires sitting, stooping, standing, bending, and walking.
  • This position requires intense and exacting mental and visual attention.
