Job Description

Job Overview

The Registered Nurse provides client-centered psychiatric and general nursing care to individuals with complex mental health, addiction, forensic, geriatric, and concurrent disorder needs. Working as part of an inter-professional team, the RN is responsible for comprehensive assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation, safety, education, and collaboration to support recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and culturally competent care.

To perform this role effectively, the Registered Nurse must demonstrate the competencies necessary to deliver safe, high-quality care within a dynamic clinical environment and enhance the nurse's ability to contribute to specialized populations, programming, and system-level initiatives.


Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Assessment

Provide client-centered psychiatric and nursing care to individuals from diverse cultural and social backgrounds

Conduct comprehensive physical, mental status, and behavioural assessments

Develop, implement, and evaluate inter-professional plans of care for clients with complex mental health, addiction, forensic, and/or age-related needs

Monitor client responses to pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions

Support clients with severe and persistent mental illness, concurrent disorders, and psychosocial rehabilitation needs

Crisis Intervention, Safety, and Risk Management

Apply critical thinking, clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills in dynamic and high-acuity situations

Utilize crisis intervention, de-escalation, and emergency psychiatry principles

Ensure the safety and security of the inpatient/client care environment

Therapeutic Programming and Client Engagement

Facilitate and co-facilitate evidence-based group programming and individual therapeutic interventions

Deliver recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, culturally competent, and family-sensitive care

Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical programming and processes

Collaboration and Care Coordination

Work collaboratively as a member of an inter-professional team

Liaise and collaborate with internal services and external community agencies to coordinate continuity of care

Apply knowledge of assessment processes and relevant legal and mental health systems, where applicable

Education, Supervision, and Professional Development

Provide education, guidance, and support to clients and families

Provide education, supervision, and mentorship to nursing students and learners

Participate in clinical supervision, reflective practice, and ongoing professional development

Research, Quality Improvement, and Documentation

Contribute to clinical research activities and quality improvement initiatives

Maintain accurate, timely, and professional clinical documentation

Professional Practice and Workplace Contribution

Practice in accordance with professional regulatory standards, ethical guidelines, and organizational policies and procedures

Demonstrate leadership, accountability, and professionalism in all aspects of practice

Promote and contribute to a healthy, inclusive, and respectful workplace


Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S./CPR) certification

Nursing experience caring for individuals with mental illness and/or addiction issues

Demonstrated ability to manage behaviour and respond effectively in crisis situations

Sound knowledge of psychiatric and mental health nursing practice, emergency psychiatry, crisis intervention, severe and persistent mental illness, addiction, trauma-informed care, recovery-oriented practice, and culturally competent care

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to support therapeutic relationships and inter-professional collaboration

Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, organizational, and problem-solving skills

Ability to work effectively within a diverse inter-professional team environment

Computer literacy and ability to use electronic clinical documentation systems

Ability to work rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing and/or Gerontology

Knowledge of geriatric mental health, normal aging processes, and gerontological nursing principles

Knowledge of forensic mental health systems and legal frameworks

Experience with concurrent disorders and psychosocial rehabilitation models

Experience facilitating therapeutic or psychoeducational groups

Participation in clinical research or quality improvement initiatives

Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language

ONA Salary Range: $41.15 – $58.98 per hour
