Security Officer (part-time/28 hrs per week)

This position helps maintain a safe and secure campus environment by patrolling assigned university facilities, identifying security risks, enforcing university policies, and responding to incidents. Security Officers work closely with BYU Police and other campus partners to protect people and property while supporting emergency response efforts. Assignments may include Building Security, the Museum of Art (MOA), Mission Training Center (MTC), Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL), Broadcasting Building (BYUB), Motion Picture Studios (MPS), and the Goshen Facility.

What you’ll do in this position:

  • Patrol and inspect assigned areas for security risks and safety concerns
  • Enforce university security policies and procedures
  • Identify suspicious or criminal activity and coordinate with BYU Police
  • Assist sworn officers and respond to security-related calls for service
  • Initiate and support emergency response efforts
  • Monitor and operate electronic and physical security systems
  • Maintain accurate reports and documentation
  • Provide professional customer service while fostering a safe campus environment

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Valid Utah driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation
  • Ability to maintain department physical fitness standards
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and in all weather conditions
  • Working knowledge of security practices, emergency response procedures, and applicable laws
  • Proficiency with security equipment, computer systems, and communication devices
  • Strong judgment, professionalism, and the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills

Preferred:

  • Previous security or law enforcement experience
  • Supervisory or field training experience
  • Knowledge of crime prevention principles and university security operations

Pay Grade: 47

Typical Starting Pay: $18.75-$23.75

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
