Job Summary:

To install, maintain, and repair air, water, steam, gas and waste disposal systems.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

1. Services and maintains drainage systems by:

  • repairing or replacing plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, water heaters and hot water tanks.
  • repairing/replacing washers and/or pipes to eliminate leaks.
  • opening clogged drains.
  • cleaning pipes with chemicals, acid.
  • Inspecting all storm gates.
  • Operating the sewer machine to clean lines.

2. Installs piping and fixtures by:

  • determining, ordering, and picking up supplies and tools required.
  • laying out, cutting, measuring, fabricating and assembling piping and fixtures required using various tools.
  • installing plumbing system or revision as required.

3. Completes additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

4. Follows safety procedures.

5. Completes performance review process with supervisor/employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.

6. Communicates openly and recognizes contributions of co-workers and supervisor.

7. Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for services and information; including maintaining up to date information about the department and university.

Relationships:

Continuous contact with members of own work unit and immediate supervisor to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions. Discussion of non-controversial matters.

Frequent contact with member of other departments, students, general public, and vendors to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions. Discussion of non-controversial matters.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Errors are readily detected in the normal course of work by standard check or crosscheck. 

Reports To: Mechanical Shop Supervisor

Completed work is referred to supervisor for review.

Education/Skill Requirements:

High School graduate with 1 – 2 years experience in related field.

Ability to read and interpret diagrams.

Ability to perform basic math.

Work Conditions:

Work is performed inside in restrooms, laboratories, equipment room or shop conditions with frequent exposure to dampness, noise, chemicals, heights, and confined spaces.

Work requires:

  • Daily use of hand tools such as auger, wrenches, hammer, welding torch, concrete saw, pipe cutter, grinder, etc.
  • Frequent use of chemicals to open clogged drains and clean pipes.
  • Continuous reaching, bending, stooping, pulling, twisting to use equipment and install piping and fixtures.
  • Occasional lifting to remove or transport fixtures and supplies (up to 50 pounds).
  • Frequent climbing stairs to access work sites.
  • Occasional use of forklift to transport materials to various locations.

This position is subject to call-back to perform emergency repairs.
