Position Overview
The School of Music at Texas A&M University–Kingsville invites applications for a three‑year Visiting Assistant Professor of Musicology position. The successful candidate will be a creative and dedicated pedagogue and scholar who will collaborate with the Musicology Area Coordinator and other music faculty, contributing to the School of Music’s mission of excellence in performance, scholarship, education, and community engagement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching
Teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in musicology according to the needs of the School of Music, including courses in the core Western music history sequence, as well as:
History of Rock and Roll
Explorations in Music History
Introduction to Research in Music
Musicology Seminar (in an area of the scholar’s expertise)
Collegium musicum
Additional courses as needed
Deliver instruction in various formats, including campus and online environments when needed.
Develop course materials such as syllabi, assignments, and assessments aligned with departmental expectations.
Maintain high standards of teaching effectiveness and student engagement.
Maintain scheduled Student Success hours in accordance with university policies.
Service
Support student retention in collaboration with the Musicology Coordinator and other faculty.
Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and other service activities.
Professional Growth
Maintain currency in the field of Musicology
Engage in professional development opportunities in the musicology field and/or on campus

Required Qualifications
Graduate degree in music history or musicology (Ph.D. preferred)
Demonstrated record of relevant, successful university-level teaching
Established or emerging research profile
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in Musicology
Experience teaching and designing online synchronous and asynchronous courses
Ability to work with students from a variety of backgrounds
Interest in or commitment to community engagement or public-facing scholarship
Record of collegiality and service in professional settings
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong foundation in music history pedagogy and effective university teaching practices
Ability to independently manage course design, administration, and grading
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated interpersonal skills
Commitment to student success and retention

Additional Information
A federal proclamation issued on September 19, 2025, imposes a $100,000 fee on new H-1B petitions filed after September 21, 2025. Texas A&M University-Kingsville will not pay this fee. If immigration sponsorship may be required for employment, consult with private immigration counsel, at the individual’s expense, is recommended to determine whether the individual’s current immigration status would make a potential offer of employment from Texas A&M University-Kingsville subject to this fee.
In addition, on January 27, 2026, Texas Governor Abbott issued a moratorium on the filing of any new H-1B petitions unless approved by the Texas Workforce Commission. Accordingly, if sponsorship for employment visa status is required now or in the future, this moratorium may affect the university’s ability to employ the selected final candidate. TAMUK will adhere to applicable regulations regarding visa opportunities.
