Job Description
About this opportunity:
Cenovus Energy and the Foster Creek team are seeking a Senior Production Engineer/Technologist to play a key role in optimizing the performance of one of North America’s leading SAGD operations. In this position, you will work within a multidisciplinary team to drive production growth, maximize reserve recovery, and improve steam efficiency across approximately 50 SAGD well pairs. This is an opportunity for a highly motivated and technically strong engineer to influence both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic initiatives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The successful candidate will combine strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize competing demands, lead cross-functional initiatives, and deliver operational excellence.
What you’ll do:
Optimize operations and production for ~50 SAGD well pairs, including improving reservoir conformance, designing producer/injector completions, managing ESP performance (run life, sizing/design, etc.), developing operating strategies (ESP setpoints, steam/gas injection rates, pressure targets), and ensuring data quality (well tests, operating data).
Support completions designs and operating strategies for new well pads.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (Completions & Well Servicing, Operations, Process Engineering, Reservoir Engineering, Geology) to identify and execute value-add opportunities.
Lead side projects or SME initiatives, such as automation projects, DTS or ESP strategy development, metering & well testing improvements, data science and visualization, well integrity management, source & disposal wells, and inactive well management.
Drive safe, efficient production while minimizing SOR within facility constraints.
Identify gaps and deliver strategic projects that support broader Production Engineering goals.
Who you are:
Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:
Legally authorized to work in Canada
Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) or Engineering Diploma required with 8+ years of engineering experience in the oil and gas industry, preferably within SAGD operations
Field operations experience and/or experience in production, reservoir, development, or completions engineering associated with SAGD well pairs and thermal facilities is considered a strong asset
Strong understanding of SAGD operations, artificial lift systems (including ESPs), and related surface facilities, with familiarity in PFDs, P&IDs, and subsurface disciplines
Demonstrated analytical and technical capabilities, including experience with data manipulation, visualization, PI systems, and Power BI
Self-motivated and adaptable problem solver with strong communication, organizational, and stakeholder engagement skills, with occasional travel to site required
We acknowledge the value of transferrable skills and may consider equivalent combinations of experience and education should you not meet a specific requirement.
Note: The application deadline for this position is 11:59 PM MT June 12, 2026.
