Overview
TransitAmerica Services,Inc. is currently seeking Assistant Conductors in San Jose, CA to join our team
The Assistant Conductor is responsible for assisting the Conductor with the supervision and administration of crew responsibilities and the safe movement of the Caltrain passenger and work trains between San Francisco and Gilroy, with multiple stops, and other locations as required.
The pay rate for the position is $40.53/hour.
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Assists in supervising the operation and administration of the train while ensuring that equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with Federal and State regulations, General Code of Operating Rules, Caltrain Air Brake & Train Handling Rules, Caltrain Timetables and Special Instructions, Caltrain Safety Rules, Union Pacific Timetable and Special Instructions, TransitAmerica Policies, and procedures and JPB Contractual and Service Instructions.
- Provide customer service to all passengers as required and upon request or as needed – including questions and concerns.
- Accepts responsibility for the safety and security of all passengers and crew members.
- Accepts responsibility for compliance with rules and regulations without direct supervision.
- Be qualified on the current version of all applicable operating rules.
- Report to the designated home terminal at the assigned time to:

Perform a job briefing.
- 2
Perform the necessary procedures to qualify the consist prior to departing the maintenance facility.
- 3
Position the train at the originating station prior to scheduled departure time.
- Make public address announcements as necessary.
- Perform switching assignments as requested in cooperation with other departments.
- Perform all required inspections, tests, procedures and complete all required paperwork.
- Identify and document equipment defects on the Daily Equipment Inspection Report.
- Work as a crew member along with the Locomotive Engineer and Conductor assigned to their equipment.
- Perform the duties of railroad Incident Commander at any accident or incident scene the train/crew is involved in.
- Must wear the required uniform in the performance of duties.
- Interfaces with all Caltrain/ACE/Amtrak passengers, JPB representatives, host railroad dispatchers, as well as Federal, State, and Local regulatory and emergency service personnel.
- Work in inclement weather, as well as rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
- Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- No previous railroad experience is required
Experience in commuter rail operations, is preferable.
- Any combination of education and experience that could provide the knowledge and ability to pass the required initial and annual examinations.
- Crew members must have sufficient equipment knowledge and aptitude to restore equipment failures with support from the maintenance of equipment personnel.
- Must not have had any railroad operating rule violations or any positive drug and alcohol test results within the past five years.
- Must successfully obtain and maintain CPR/AED/First Aid certification and be capable of administering aid while on duty.
- Must demonstrate the ability to remain calm, professional, and effective in routine, emergency, and life-threatening situations, including the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and operational needs.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
- Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
- Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role
This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements of this job.
- Able to walk on uneven surfaces up to one-half mile.
- Maintain balance for an extended period of time while train is in motion.
- Must be able to be aware of surroundings and follow verbal commands while being exposed to moderately loud noises on a daily basis.
- Work in a confined access/space environment with a width of 16 inches.
- Must be able to adapt to various temperature extremes including but not limited to heat, cold, moisture and wind.
- Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
- Able to tolerate repetitive movements, squatting/bending, and overhead reaching.
- Able to lift up to shoulder height and horizontally transfer up to 35 pounds for a distance up to 10 feet.
- Regularly kneel, bend, squat for extended periods of time.
- Regularly reach overhead.
- Regularly grasp/squeeze equipment with a force up to 20 pounds.
- Regularly ascend/descend a platform with a height of up to 36 inches from the floor.
- Regularly ascend and descend an 8 step ladder while carrying up to 20 pounds.
- Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
- Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position.
- Able to work in a safety sensitive work environment.
