Job Description

Develops research strategies and focuses on the development of new technologies, methods and strategies in partnership with Principal Investigators. Manages large scale projects. Provides high level of scientific/clinical research expertise. Designs and conducts high quality scientific or clinical research. Provides direction for research projects in his/her specific expertise area under the direction of the Principal Investigator and provides mentorship to more junior scientists.

Overview: 

The Department of Psychology and Biobehavioral Sciences housed at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Principal Scientist with specialized expertise in neuroimaging-guided neuromodulation (i.e., brain stimulation) to enhance cognitive-focused rehabilitative interventions.

The candidate will work with faculty members, project coordinators, clinical research associates, and other researchers on grant and institutionally funded research projects to improve biobehavioral health outcomes for survivors of pediatric catastrophic diseases. The candidate will be engaged in a variety of research activities related to the development of observational/mechanistic and intervention protocols, analysis of multimodal data related to brain function and integrity, oversight of randomized clinical trials to enhance brain function, grant development, and dissemination of research findings through published manuscripts and conference presentations.      

The incumbent will be responsible for driving strategic decisions throughout the various stages of development of randomized clinical trials involving personalized neuromodulation procedures.   

Experience with the use of computational tools, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in the analysis of high-volume multimodal data related to brain integrity and function is preferred. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop research strategies, including new technologies and methods, in partnership with Principal Investigators.

  • Manage large-scale, multidisciplinary projects through proactive research collaboration and provide direction in specific areas of expertise.

  • Design and conduct high-quality scientific or clinical research.

  • Analyze emerging trends in scientific and technical advances, generate new scientific concepts and procedures, and lead adoption.

  • Publish as first author or co-author multi-institutional research projects in high-impact interdisciplinary journals; provide peer review guidance as a member of an editorial board.

  • Initiates and conducts research without direct supervision.

  • Provides input on and evaluates protocol design, including quality control procedures. Develops and provides oversight of protocols for project-specific research.

  • Follows and upholds appropriate human subjects’ protections, event reporting, data safety and monitoring requirements, and safety regulations.

  • Coordinates the design and testing of novel and established data collection instruments. Duplicates experiments and/or procedures from the research literature. Oversees data quality control (QC) procedures. Utilizes institutional resources appropriately.

  • Provides instruction, guidance, and supervision of research staff.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific area is required.

Minimum Experience:

  • Fifteen (15) years of relevant work experience is required.

  • Thirteen (13) years of relevant work experience is required with a Master's degree.

  • Ten (10) years or relevant work experience is required with a PhD.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $138,320 - $262,080 per year for the role of Principal Scientist - Psychology & Biobehavioral Sciences.
