Job Description

Purpose of Position

The Director of School Operations is responsible for excellence in the implementation of practices and procedures related to students in order to ensure effective instructional delivery and positive school culture.  The Director of School Operations is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the District's school operational policies and procedures to ensure that all students graduate from high school prepared to continue their education or enter the workforce.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of School Operations will:

  • Ensure consistent implementation  of polices, procedures and practices related to students and schools across the system and suggest revisions to policies based on observation and data collection
  • Serve as a liaison/problem solver between schools and other Sun Prairie Area School District departments
  • Work closely and collaboratively with Directors of Elementary and Secondary Education, Director of Human Resources, Directors of Student Services, Director Digital Media, Innovation and Strategy, and Director of Systemic Equity and Inclusion to ensure smooth and equitable operations of all schools
  • Provide situational coaching and support to school principals for issues related to school operations
  • Coordinate regular review and revision of the student code of conduct and ensure development of administrators, deans, and youth advocates to ensure its consistent and appropriate implementation
  • Problem solve with schools around complex student discipline/educational issues and coordinate appropriate responses, including necessary communication, in line with the student code of conduct
  • Provide oversight and facilitate professional learning for the job-alike group consisting of Deans of Students and Youth Advocates in collaboration with school principals
  • Mediate informal and formal complaints and appeals at the elementary and secondary levels related to students
  • Appropriately process and address elevated parent/caregiver concerns and complaints through the District Procedure BDDI-R process
  • Meet with parents on suspension appeals, conduct any resulting investigations, and make determinations to uphold or overturn consequences issued by school principals
  • Lead the expulsion process by working with building principals and ensure necessary materials are prepared for expulsion hearing or the appropriate pre-expulsion or abeyance agreement
  • Process and address district level bullying, discrimination or harassment complaints regarding school and athletic based concerns. Serves as the district's Title IX coordinator.
  • Coordinate with school principals and the Director of Facilities and Grounds on school safety training, emergency preparedness drills, and other safety issues
  • Provide summer school day-to-day operational support and problem-solving
  • Respond to all other issues concerning operations in all schools, including school-based emergencies not requiring a coordinated district response
  • Shows professionalism and excellence in communication (in collaboration with the Communications Department) in all aspects of the position: timeliness, punctuality, attitude, attention to detail, integrity, and ability to positively interact with all of our employees and stakeholders

 

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Principal license (5051) required
  • Master's Degree in Education required, doctorate preferred
  • Wisconsin Certification as Superintendent (5003) and Director of Instruction (5010) preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience as a district-level director preferred
  • Related experience as trainer, facilitator or supervisor preferred
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence, i.e. valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise and having the desire to learn in these areas

 

Physical and Sensory Requirements

  • Ability to operate a computer terminal/PC and other office equipment
  • Ability to move around buildings freely and tour buildings
  • Ability to sit, stand, type or use the keyboard for extended periods of time
  • Ability to give oral presentations
  • Ability to lead and work in highly emotional conflicts and situations involving students, families, staff, and principals
  • Ability to compose written reports and documents
  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, interpret policy and communicate well with others
  • Ability to work long hours

  • Consistent and punctual attendance is a job requirement

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Shall complete a physical examination as required by Wisconsin Statute 118.25.
