DYS is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio. DYS is statutorily mandated to confine felony offenders, ages 10-21, who have been adjudicated and committed by one of Ohio's 88 county juvenile courts. During their stay with DYS, youth are engaged in programming that is designed to address their criminological and behavioral needs. DYS reaches thousands of youth in facilities and those on parole.

DYS is seeking a Teacher 1 (Art) to oversee facility rehabilitative arts programming. The ideal candidate will be an inspiring educator with a solid artistic background and a passion to habilitate and empower youth through creative expression.

Specifically, the Teacher 1 (Art) will:           

  • Works under direction of Principal in order to provide instruction in arts and crafts to youth; assesses educational needs of youth and develops lesson plans to address those needs to include individu-alized assignments and training; provides instruction in art and in-dividual assistance; administers, scores, and interprets examina-tions and proficiency indicators; maintains discipline and/or secu-rity; counsels students concerning their performance, behavior and/or personal problems.

  • Continuously assesses youths progress and updates youths rec-ord; provides student performance reports to appropriate staff for use in planning facility, transitional, and community treatment ac-tivities; implements facility policies and procedures; plans, over-sees, and participates in other school and facility activities.

  • Attends variety of meetings (e.g., in-service training, treatment team, student interviews); prepares required records and reports (e.g., enrollment figures, grades, student progress); inventories and orders supplies and materials needed; researches, selects and recommends new teaching materials; maintains professional growth through participation in meetings, workshops, and formal education programs; performs other duties as assigned.

Current Teacher Certificate appropriate for arts & crafts & grade level to be assigned; Teacher 1, 71121, must also have baccalaureate degree or less;

The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening. All new candidates hired to the Department of Youth Services must complete a mandatory 6 weeks of training. Week 1 is held at CJCF,  weeks 2 through 4 are held at DYS Training Academy in Orient, Ohio, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:00  pm. Weeks 5 - 6 are on the job training held at CJCF.
