Job Description

Summary

The ED Tech functions primarily in direct patient care, and demonstrates *competent* clinical practice with a variety of patients

The tech in the ED works as part of a team with a common goal of offering patient centered, timely care, in a safe and friendly environment

The tech in this position offers individualized compassionate care to emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatients based on the direction of the physician and RN

The tech pleasantly provides nonjudgmental care for the acutely ill, as well as the non-acute patient

This position requires the ability to perform multiple ancillary roles including, but not limited to, performing duties and procedures within the scope of their practice as assigned, specimen collection, vital signs, EKGs, stocking of supplies, cleaning, and transportation of patients, clerical responsibilities, lab collection, respiratory treatments, and other duties as assigned

This position requires assisting the nurse, physician, and other members of the team to provide relationship based patient centered care

The tech in this role works with multiple types of sophisticated equipment and handles various types of patients in a friendly and frequently stressful environment.


Responsibilities

40%* The tech as part of a multidisciplinary team, maintains a friendly customer oriented attitude at all times

It is expected that all team members will work together to provide the best possible care to MyMichigan Health's patients, families, visitors, staff, community members, and any other person that is encountered while representing MyMichigan Health

It is expected that at all times the tech will treat every person they encounter with non-judgmental: kindness, compassion, respect, and relationship based care. 

 

30%* Follows direction from RN to provide services as prescribed by the physician's authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based practice that is within the tech's scope of practice

Provides direct patient care including minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as assigned. 

 

20%* Reports effectiveness of treatment plan to the RN and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.

 

10%* The tech is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines

The tech maintains knowledge of MyMichigan Health and ED specific policies and procedures relating to the care provided, and maintains professional standards.

 

 


Certifications and Licensures

Credential: BLS: Basic Life Support

Equivalent Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer

Credential: PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification

Equivalent Experience: Must hold an internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan, or be certified or registered as a Medical Assistant (MA) in the State of Michigan, or be a nursing student who is currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program and has successfully completed the first semester. *For current PCTs with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or a lapsed LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification will be offered*

Safety

Demonstrates awareness of specific safety concerns in department.

Demonstrates competencyin Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies

Complies with MyMichigan Health safety guidelines. 

Maintain department equipment as necessary.

Identifies and communicates concern regarding unsafe conditions or equipment promptly.

Participates in medical center safety drills.

Utilizes appropriate lift equipment on a routine basis.

Education

Attends education days.

Seeks opportunities for self-education and enrichment while sharing information with co-workers.

*Patient Care

Collects vital signs and weight.

Participates in direct patient care

Moves, lifts, and transports patients as required.

Performs EKG.

Performs intravenous access as ordered and when within scope, in a prompt accurate manner.

Performs other clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies.

Recognizes and displays pleasant, friendly and cooperative manner to public.

Maintains clean and tidy exam room, including inventory of room supplies.

Maintains orderly patient flow.

Cleans equipment.

Is familiar with cardiac monitors, can apply leads and operate equipment.

Can assist with emergency equipment and procedures under the direct supervision of the RN or ED physician.

Completes documentation as required.

Follows sterile technique during set up and throughout procedure

Assists physicians with all types of procedures.

Quality

Supports the mission, goals, policies, and standards of the ED.

Assists RN to ensure patient care outcomes and safety needs are met.

Communicates identified problems to appropriate personnel and implements actions to assure patient needs are met.

Assists unit in maintaining the area according to Joint Commission standards.

Participates in quality improvement activities in the department.

Unit Assistant

All Clerical Duties.

Answers telephone.

Enters labs and other orders as requested

Enters POC results in the EMR.

Assists with medical procedures and minor surgery.

Assists with all medical procedures and minor surgery.

Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique.

Emergency Care/Safety

Health Care Provider certification maintained (as applicable).

Performs according to procedure in all medical center emergency situations.

Provides and ensures safe and secure environment for the patient.

Is familiar with all safety and emergency procedures.

Observes fall safety precautions.

Ordering and Stocking

 

AAssists with ordering as indicated.

May include: Orders from purchasing weekly for medical supplies, lab supplies and office supplies.
