Job Description

The Boise City Attorney’s Office is seeking a Paralegal I to support its Public Safety Division, with an emphasis on litigation support, civil case management and legal document preparation. This hybrid-eligible role is ideal for a detail-oriented legal professional who takes pride in accurate work, sound judgment and helping attorneys move legal matters forward.

This position supports a variety of municipal legal work, including civil litigation files, pleadings, court filings, public records matters, legal and factual research, document review and case tracking. The Paralegal I plays an important role in supporting legal services tied to City operations, public safety and the Boise community.

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Associate's degree in paralegal studies and four years of experience in civil law, legal case management, legal research and writing, or assisting attorneys, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
  • City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
  • Criminal Justice Information System background check (CJIS)

Prepares and maintains civil case files including litigation matters. Drafts agreements and other legal documents and reviews drafts to ensure legal sufficiency, content accuracy and correct grammar, punctuation and formatting. Stores, organizes and locates documents, records and files using various document management software. Develops, implements and refines workflows and procedures.

Assists with identifying project goals and milestones, and adheres to project schedules and assists with project-related problem solving. Manages and maintains all documents related to subrogation cases, collaborating with attorneys and staff. Manages housing evictions and represents the city in small claims court. Assists attorneys in magistrate and district court collection matters and initiates and pursues collection of delinquent debts owed to the city. Tracks bankruptcy, estate, and probate cases affecting city collections and performs research to locate debtors.

Processes public records requests under the supervision of an attorney. Processes property and weapons dispositions using applicable statutes, rules and case law. Coordinates real property transactions, notarizes documents and files pleadings with courts. Submits documents for recording in the official records of Ada County. 

Provides general administrative support and serves as the initial point of contact for inquiries from employees, members of the public, businesses and outside organizations and directs written correspondence and telephone calls to the appropriate person. Independently reviews appellate briefs prepared by an attorney for accuracy and correctness. Performs legal and factual research at the direction of an attorney.

  • Legal terminology, principles, precedents, procedures, research methods, legal document preparation and review
  • Investigation and interview techniques
  • Federal and state court pleadings, rules, practices, and processes
  • Research, fact-checking and trial preparation
  • Computer usage, including related software.
Ability to:
  • Understand and interpret Idaho statutes, codes, court rules, regulations, procedures, precedents, case law and model legal documents
  • Work independently with attention to detail under tight deadlines
  • Coordinate complex projects
  • Appropriately prioritize a heavy workload
  • Use proper spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and grammar in composing various documents
  • Exhibit proficiency in legal research
  • Use good time management skills
  • Interact effectively and tactfully with others in a variety of situations
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Perform all essential functions, as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies, legal assisting, or pre-law studies and six years of experience in civil law, legal case management, legal research and writing or assisting attorneys.

Experience researching and interpreting complex regulations, policies, ordinances, statutes, laws and codes.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk and hear. Work in this position also includes close vision and distance vision. Employees will sit, stand, walk, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
