POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction, the Group & Family Programs Educator delivers a variety of programs, including overnights, camps, and family and adult programs. This position organizes and maintains all materials associated with the programs, supervises participants, and occasionally assists with curriculum development and administrative duties.
 
POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Delivers various conservation and educational programs.
  • Utilizes developed lessons, hands-on activities, night/morning hikes, and games to create a comprehensive experience for program participants.
  • Responsible for the safety and wellbeing of program participants.
  • Facilitates and supervises overnights with program participants either indoors or outdoors, while effectively communicating with Zoo security staff.
  • Collaborates with Scout Leaders and aids in badge/journey completion.
  • Thinks critically to address challenges, consistently makes decisions that champion safety, integrity, and professionalism in all contexts, without direct oversight.

Assists education supervisors with the development and enhancement of programs, including:
  • Resource gathering and maintenance.
  • Administrative support.
  • Working to consistently improve knowledge of science education techniques and content.
20%
Assists in the promotion of the Zoo & Aquarium’s programs and events.
5%

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
    1. High School diploma or GED, preferred.
    2. Course work in education, biological sciences, or related field, desired.
  2. EXPERIENCE:
    1. 1-year formal or informal education or teaching experience desired.
    2. Previous zoo, aquarium, or museum related experience desired.
    3. Knowledge of classroom management techniques and skills using teaching aids, including animals, biofacts, artifacts and library resources, desired.
    4. Knowledge of conservation/biological/environmental teaching programs and interpretation.
    5. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and audio-visual equipment, required.
    6. Strong presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  3. OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    1. Must have valid driver's license. 
    2. Can move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance. Assistance depending upon task.
    3. Must be willing to become CPR/First-Aid certified.
    4. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and overnight/evening hours, in all weather extremes.
    5. Must pass a background and drug screening.
